An agile and skillful 5-7 ball handler at the guard position who was known for being a spark plug that ignited the rest of her Longhorn teammates, Evwella Munn was an impactful player in the early days of legendary coach Jody Conradt’s career at Texas. In her two seasons on the Forty Acres, Texas posted 70 wins against just eight losses, with a 37-4 mark and No. 4 national ranking in 1978-79 and 33-4 record and No. 7 national ranking in 1979-80. Munn’s success and path to Texas started in El Paso where she’s considered one of the greatest women’s basketball players to ever come out of that city. Munn was invited to the tryout for the U.S. Women’s Basketball Olympic team in 1976. She once scored 79 points in a game at Jefferson High School, a city record that still stands today and was before the three-point line was established. Munn averaged 40 points per game in high school and went on to an All-American career at Temple Junior College from 1976-78. She would make her mark on the Forty Acres before playing a game for the Longhorns, when Temple JC was Texas’ opponent in the inaugural game at the newly opened Frank Erwin Center on November 29, 1977. As a matter of fact, she made history that day, scoring the first official basket in the grand opening of Texas’ new arena, a game that Munn and her teammates gave the Longhorns all they could handle in narrowly falling, 67-64. She would turn in a sensational 34-point scoring performance that led her team to a 94-89 victory over Texas in Temple later that season. That certainly caught Conradt’s eye and by the next season, Munn was a Longhorn — becoming the first player from El Paso to join the Texas Women’s Basketball program when she arrived for the 1978-79 season. She would go on to play in 75 games for the Longhorns and after two seasons held the Longhorns all-time career record with 301 assists. In her senior year, Munn played in 34 games and scored 341 points. During an early-season game against Oregon at the Guisti Invitational in Corvalis, Ore. on Dec. 18, 1979, she practically single-handedly pulled off the victory with her 25-point second-half effort in an 81-79 Longhorn win. In two seasons at Texas, she scored 708 points along with 301 assists and 169 steals. Munn earned her bachelor’s degree in Education in 1983 and was drafted by the women’s professional league but elected to return to Austin and serve as a student coaching assistant. In 2023, she was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2025, she had her No. 10 jersey retired at Jefferson High School. Following her playing career, Munn enjoyed a 32-year teaching and coaching career. She started at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and later was an assistant to fellow Texas Athletics Hall of Honoree Nell Fortner at Killeen High School. Munn also coached and taught at Del Valle High School, Johnson High School, Montwood High School, Nolan Richardson Middle School, Magoffin Middle School and her career culminated with retirement from MacArthur Middle School in El Paso in 2017.
