Hardee sets collegiate decathlon record at 2006 Texas Relays
04.06.2006 | Texas Athletics
Austin, Texas (AP) -- Texas' Trey Hardee broke the NCAA decathlon record Thursday by winning four of five events for the second consecutive day at the Texas Relays.
Hardee completed the event with 8465 points, two ahead of Tom Pappas' 8463 set in 1999 at Tennessee. His point total also puts him in eighth position on the U.S. all-time decathlon list, about 170 points behind Bruce Jenner in seventh.
"It feels good, it's worth it," Hardee said. "All the pain, all the times you come out here sweating, throwing up after practice, cooling down, the ice tubs, it's worth it. It feels good to do it here at home, at Texas."
Hardee initially fell short of the record by one point.
He entered the 1,500 needing to finish the race in 5:06.56, but clocked in just shy at 5:06.73, giving him 8462 points for the competition.
However, Texas Relays official John Chaplin reviewed the photo finishes of each of the 10 events. After the review, officials changed Hardee's record-breaking 10.36 second finish in the 100 on Wednesday to 10.35, thus adding three points to his total.
According to Chaplin, a review occurs anytime a competitor is within five points of a record.
"Whether it's the Olympic Games or whatever, you're going to go through these processes to make sure he broke the record," Texas coach Bubba Thornton said.
The Longhorns' senior, who injured his right ankle at the NCAA indoor championships last month, appeared visibly fatigued during the last two laps of the 1,500 and fell to his knees just a few feet beyond the finish line. He even admitted to blacking out during the final 300 meters, possibly a result of the 90-degree Texas heat.
"That was one of the hardest races I've ever run," Hardee said. "My whole left side took a beating because of my ankle."
Hardee began the day with a 13.83 finish in the 110 hurdles, a 158-03 discus throw, a 17-00 3/4 pole vault and a 196-10 javelin throw.
Overshadowed by Hardee's effort was fellow Longhorn Donovan Kilmartin, who recorded a career-best 7897 points in the decathlon, 168 ahead of his previous record. Edwin Billot of LSU rounded out the top three in the event with 7468 points.
Washington State's Julie Pickler won the heptathlon with 5734 points while her twin sister Diana finished in third with 5579 points. Ryanne Dupree, competing unattached, finished in second with 5606 points.
The relay events also kicked off Thursday. The Texas women led the 4-by-800 from wire-to-wire and finished in 8:45.68. Oral Roberts caught defending champion USC in the anchor leg of the men's race to win in 7:17.02.
In the second-longest running event of the Relays, Faithy Kamangila of Oral Roberts won the 5,000 in 17:22.22. Tonny Okello of South Alabama won the men's race in 14:22.89.
Virginia Tech dominated the hammer throw with wins in both the men's and women's events. Kristen Callan threw for 206-06 while Spyridon Jullien won the men's side with a 238-03 heave.
Texas A&M's Dusty Williams took the men's section B pole vault with a jump of 17-06 1/2.
