LONDON, Ontario -- Texas rower Courtney MacIntosh, who recently completed her senior year at UT, has been invited to the Canadian Rowing Team selection camp in London, Ontario to compete for a spot on the national team. MacIntosh, a native of St. John's, Newfoundland, will try out for a seat on Canada's double, quad or eight boat.
The Canadian women will host their selection camp from this summer, beginning in late June in London. The rowers invited to selection camp will be considered for regattas such as the World Under-23 Championships, the Commonwealth Rowing Championships, the World University Games Regatta, the Lucerne World Cup and the 2006 Rowing World Championships.
MacIntosh finished the Canadian Team Trials (or Speed Orders) on June 11 with a fifth-place finish in the second-level final of the single scull competition. She crossed the line in 8:30.0 after going neck-and-neck the whole race with Marie Laforme from Hamilton, Ontario who took fourth (8:29.4).
"It was a great opportunity, but there is still a lot of racing left to go," said MacIntosh. "It is very exciting just to get to the next step. I am looking forward to the opportunity to represent Canada in an international regatta and at the highest level. This is a new experience for me, but I am getting stronger with each race and definitely feeling faster each time I am on the water."
MacIntosh was named to the 2006 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-South Region First Team and was honored as a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete. It marked the first career All-Region accolades for MacIntosh and the sixth consecutive year a Longhorn has been honored by the CRCA.
An education/health and fitness major, MacIntosh was a two-time CRCA National Scholar. At the UT Women's Athletics award banquet in April, MacIntosh was the co-recipient of the Lorene Rogers Scholar-Athlete Award, presented to the senior(s) with the highest overall grade-point average over four years. She carried a 3.7 GPA and will be attending law school at the University of Western Ontario in London this upcoming fall.
