METAIRIE, La. -- Less than one day after earning the NCAA Division I South Central District Athlete of the Year, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association honored Texas junior Leo Manzano as the NCAA Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year.
During the 2007 outdoor season, Manzano won his third NCAA Midwest Region championship in the 1,500-meter run on May 26. The 2007 Big 12 Champion became the first person in history, and just the second person overall, to win three Midwest Region titles since the meet began in 2003.
Manzano's successful outdoor season also included distance medley and 4xMile relay wins at the 2007 Texas and Penn Relays. He anchored both relay quartets (DMR, 4xMile) to championships to earn this year's Penn Relays Most Outstanding Athlete in the college men's relays division.
Manzano and the rest of the Longhorns start competition at the 2007 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The four-day meet begins tomorrow (June 6) with the men's decathlon at noon (CT).
