Fortson anchors U.S. medley relay to gold medal

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic -- For incoming University of Texas men's track and field freshman Danzell Fortson, the final day (July 15) of the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships proved fruitful.
Fortson ran the final 400 meters and anchored the U.S. medley relay team to a gold-medal performance (1:51.34). Fortson's relay teammates - Isaiah Sweeney (100-meter segment), Kenneth Gilstrap (200-meter segment) and William Wynne (300-meter segment) ran the first three legs of the relay before handing off to the Fort Worth, Texas native. The two-time Texas UIL champion caught and passed anchor legs from Japan (1:51.42) and Jamaica (1:52.18) for the final boys' gold medal of the international meet.
The United States led all countries in the medal standings, totaling 14 overall (seven gold, four silver and three bronze). Kenya accumulated 11 medals while Russia came in third with 10.
