Men's Track and Field tallies five regional qualifiers at Houston Invitational

The Texas men's track and field team tallied five regional qualifiers and a victory in the 1,500 meters at the Houston Invitational on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3. Freshman Brian Rhodes-Devey used a 3:56.38 in the 1,500 meters to earn his first collegiate victory, while seniors Hamza Deyaf (400-Meter Hurdles) and John Rouse (Hammer Throw), junior Raymond Harris (High Jump), freshman Maston Wallace (Pole Vault) and the 4x400-meter relay added regional qualifiers.
Deyaf used a 51.54 to finish third in the 400-meter hurdles and notch his fifth regional qualifier this year. Rouse placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 58.05m (190-5), his fourth regional qualifier of the season. Harris finished second in the high jump behind a clearance of 2.10m (6-10 3/4). That also was his fourth regional qualifier this year. Wallace cleared 5.20m (17-0 3/4) in the pole vault to finish third, while notching his fifth regional qualifier of the season.
The 4x400-meter relay of freshman Andre Thomas, juniors Tevan Everett and Jacob Hernandez and freshman Danzell Fortson clocked a regional-qualifying 3:08.11 to finish second. Fortson, Everett and Thomas also ran the 400 meters with Fortson finishing fourth in 47.24, just missing the regional-qualifying standard of 47.20, Everett placing 9th (47.99) and Thomas coming in 10th (48.03).
Also on the track, freshman Rob Wetzel used a season-best 9:31.42 to place second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while fellow freshman Logan Gonzalez also established a season best to finish third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.08.
In the field, sophomore Nick Baucum finished third in the shot put with a mark of 16.07m (52-8 3/4), junior Elliot O'Hare placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 14.77m (48-5 1/2) and junior Dustin Bynum earned a fifth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 54.80m (179-9).
In addition to the action at the Houston Invitational, three Longhorns will be competing at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. on Sunday, May 4. Senior Erik Stanley and junior Kyle Miller will run the 1,500 meters, while freshman Brandon Birdsong will take part in the 5,000 meters.
