LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior Temeka Kincy advanced to the 800 meter finals with a second-place finish in the preliminaries, while junior Alex Anderson advanced to the finals in her two speciality events (100 and 200 meters) in Friday's action at the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The two-day event is taking place Friday and Saturday, May 30-31 at the Ed Weir Stadium on the campus of the University of Nebraska.
Kincy moved into Saturday evening's 800 finals after registering the second-fastest time in the preliminaries. Kincy (Indianapolis, Ind.) clocked a 2:08.52 to advance to the eight-person final which will be contested at 5:25 p.m. Central Saturday. The top finisher in the prelims was Minnesota junior Heather Dorniden in 2:06.20. A strong finish Saturday will give Kincy her second appearance at the NCAA Championships in the 800. Last year, she earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish.
Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) clocked the fourth-best time in the 100 meter preliminaries, running an 11.45 to win her heat. Two hours later, she took to the track again to run in the 200 meter prelims where she registered the fifth-fastest time of the evening, crossing in 23.07 seconds. That was Anderson's third-fastest time in the 200 this spring.
On Saturday, the 100 meter finals begin at 5:05 p.m. Central, followed by the 200 meter finals one hour later. Anderson will look to return to the NCAA Championships in the 100 meter dash for the third consecutive year and in the 200 meter run for the second straight time. Last May, Anderson advanced to the NCAA national meet in both the 100 and 200 after placing fifth at the Midwest Regionals in both events. Anderson picked up All-America honors in both sprints, placing sixth (100) and seventh (200) at the NCAAs.
In other events contested Friday, UT senior pole vaulter Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) did not place in the event as she no-heighted at the 12-foot mark. Sophomore Alicia Rue of Minnesota took the Midwest pole vault title with a jump of 13-feet, 11.75 inches (4.26 meters).
In addition to Anderson and Kincy, three other UT competitors are in action Saturday.
Sophomore Betzy Jimenez (Hereford, Texas) is one of 12 competitors in the 1500 meter finals which take place at 4:20 p.m. Central. In the field events, sophomore Jordyn Brown (Mesquite, Texas) competes in the shot put at 5 p.m., while freshman Chantel Malone (Tortola, British Virgin Islands) is one of 30 who will be in contention in the 1 p.m. triple jump competition.
