Hardee in third after day one of decathlon at Beijing Olympics

BEIJING -- Former Longhorn Trey Hardee tallied 4,428 points after the first five events of the decathlon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Thursday and sits in third place entering day two. Hardee is just five points behind second-place Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus and 93 points behind American teammate and event leader Bryan Clay.
Hardee opened the day with the second-fastest time in the 100 meters, a 10.52, which earned him 970 points. He also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 7.72 meters (25-4) to notch 990 points.
After a 13.49-meter shot put (44-3.25) (697 points), Hardee established a personal best in the high jump, clearing 2.05 meters (6-8.75) for 850 points. He finished off the day with another personal best in the 400 meters, clocking a 47.75 to score 921 points.
The 4,428 points Hardee scored on the first day are just 26 points behind his first-day personal best of 4,454 points, which he set at the 2008 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. last month.
