BERLIN -- Sanya Richards proved why she is the world's leading 400m runner as she earned her first world title in the event Tuesday at the 12th IAAF World Track & Field Championships at Berlin Olympic Stadium. The Texas Ex crossed the finish line in a world-leading time of 49.00.
With the victory, Richards became the first American to land this title since Jearl Miles took gold the last time the World Championships were hosted in Germany 16 years ago. Richard's time is also the fastest 400m by an American at a World Championship since she finished second in 49.74 at the 2005 Championships in Helsinki (Aug. 10).
Jamiaca's Shericka Williams finished second in 49.32 followed by Russia's Antonia Krivoshapka who clocked a 49.71 for third.
