PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- Incoming Women's Track and Field signee Chalonda Goodman wrapped up her summer with world titles in the 100m and 200m at the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships Sunday night. Goodman also ran a leg of Team USA's world champion 4x100m relay.
The Newnan, Ga., native easily breezed to the 100m title, crossing the line in a Pan Am Games record time of 11.22 with a legal wind of 0.8. Goodman has led the world in the event throughout the season and picked up medalist honors in the 100m at the U.S. Outdoor Junior National Championships, the 2009 Nike Outdoor Championships and the Georgia 5A State Championships.
She followed up that performance with a world title in the 200m after having entered the meet with the world's fastest junior mark of 22.94. Goodman finished third in the prelims in 24.80 to advance to the final heat where she blazed across the line in 23.08. She also ran the last leg of the USA's 4x100m relay that took first in 44.09.
Goodman is one of the most dominating female junior 100m-200m sprinters as she completed a four-year sweep of the Georgia State 5A titles in both events, along with a three-year sweep at the Nike Outdoor Championships and most recently claiming the USA Junior National Titles in both events.
Also competing in the Pan Am Games was current Longhorn Angele Cooper. After just missing out on automatically qualifying for the 400m hurdles at the U.S. Outdoor Championships, Cooper was selected to run a leg of the 4x400m relay for Team USA. The sophomore ran the second lap and helped the U.S. outlast Jamaica down the stretch for first place time of 3:36.34.
