IRVINE, Calif. -- Texas junior Kathleen Hersey led from wire-to-wire and claimed the 200-meter butterfly Friday on day four of the 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National championships.
Hersey finished in 2 minutes, 7.00 seconds to win her third U.S. national title and her second consecutive national crown in the 200m butterfly. She also captured the 100m butterfly at the 2007 USA Swimming National Championships. Hersey earns a berth on the U.S. team at the Pan Pacific Championships to be held later this month in Irvine.
Hersey (Roswell, Ga.) split 28.68 in the first 50 meters and clocked 1:00.52 at 100 meters. Hersey opened up a one-second lead over Florida's Teresa Crippen at 150 meters and held off a Crippen challenge in the final 50 meters to earn the victory.
Hersey, a finalist in the 200m butterfly at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, also represented the U.S. at the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy.
The 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships conclude Saturday in Irvine.
