Greetings Longhorn Nation,
It's finals week on the Forty Acres. This is a time for our student-athletes to put an exclamation point on all of their hard work done in the classroom. For many of our seniors, this is the final hurdle to earning a degree and setting out to change the world. I wish all of our student-athletes the best as they finish up this semester.
It's also the time of year where we begin competing in spring championships. This week, Texas Athletics hosted the NCAA Austin Regional at the UT Golf Club where our Big 12 Champion Women's Golf team earned a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championship. Join me in congratulating this outstanding team!
Softball begins Big 12 tournament play Friday vs. Iowa State. Fresh off of our sweep of the Big 12 Tennis Championships, we host NCAA First and Second Rounds at the Texas Tennis Center. We had huge crowds and a great atmosphere for the Big 12 Championships, so come join me as we continue to celebrate two outstanding programs and our state-of-the-art facility

Williams inducted into Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame
I want to congratulate Ricky Williams on his formal induction into the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2018. Williams becomes the 12th Longhorn to be inducted into the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame, joining Fred Akers, Scott Appleton, Tom Campbell, Duke Carlisle, Mike Dean, Bobby Layne, Darrell Royal, Jerry Sisemore, Cotton Speyrer, James Street and Steve Worster. This truly is a well-deserved honor! Watch the video.
Tennis teams light UT Tower
The Big 12 Champion Men's and Women's Tennis teams gathered at the Littlefield Fountain Monday night for their UT Tower lighting. I'm already excited to watch both tennis teams get back into action this weekend as we host NCAA First and Second Rounds at the Texas Tennis Center. Congrats on the Big 12 titles and good luck in NCAAs! Visit the NCAA First/Second Rounds headquarters page.
Crank wins prestigious President's Leadership Award
Track and Field/Cross Country junior Gabby Crank was named one of six recipients of the 2018 President's Leadership Award. Given annually by the Texas Exes, the President's Leadership Award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership within the student community at The University of Texas. Crank is a double major in Business Honors and Plan II Honors and juggles all that goes with being a collegiate athlete, but she also has made an impact in her community and been a leader. What an outstanding model for our student-athletes to emulate. All of us in the Texas Family are so proud of you, Gabby! Read more.
Sports Medicine staff recognized by Big 12 Conference
Texas Athletics' Sports Medicine staff was recently honored as the Big 12 Sports Medicine Staff of the Year. This is the third time that Texas has been honored (2006, 2013), more than any other conference school. In addition, Kassi Hardee was named the Big 12 Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year. Hardee, who is a Texas alum, oversees sports medicine care for the softball program. Kassi and her colleagues are so integral to the success of our program. Thank you all for your professionalism and dedication to our coaches and student-athletes. Read more.
Brooks called to U.S. Under-18 National Team camp
Congrats to Soccer freshman defender Cameron Brooks on receiving a bid to join the 2018 U.S. Soccer Under-18 Women's National Team training camp. Brooks joins current freshman midfielder/forward Haley Berg and sophomore forward Cyera Hintzen as Texas players having earned national team camp call-ups this year. These camps are designed as a proving ground for selection to events such as the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup which will be played in France this August. I'm so proud and excited for what lies ahead for these athletes. Read more.
This is Texas Tour continues
Texas Athletics and the Texas Exes are hitting the road and crisscrossing the state to celebrate Texas fans in their own hometowns. The first leg of the This Is Texas Tour visited Midland and Amarillo. We were in Dallas and Fort Worth this week and we're on to Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Houston, Rio Grande Valley (Edinburg) and Tyler over the next few weeks. Join me, Texas Exes Executive Director Chuck Harris and other special guests, plus great food, drinks, music, and lots of Longhorn pride. See the full schedule here.
Zubia's path to Texas
On the heels of a huge road series win over No. 9 Texas Tech, the Longhorn Network aired a great profile piece about Baseball redshirt freshman Zach Zubia and his journey to Texas. What sticks out to me most about Zach's story is that it's a reminder that our paths are not set and that given the right attitude and atmosphere, we can turn a perceived negative into a positive.
