Greetings Longhorn Nation,
Last week was a lot of fun with a highlight reel of awesome plays in Coach Herman and our Longhorns 42-31 win in Morgantown, including the shock and amazement of seeing a 300-pound man rumbling for a touchdown. You go Sam Cosmi. That was a play for the ages, and you are one bad man with the ball in your hands! The best part of the weekend at West Virginia is we improved to 2-0 in the Big 12 and climbed to No. 11 in the polls.
Now we're heading into Red River Showdown week! There's nothing quite like this rivalry that goes back 120 years to 1900, has been played an equal distance from both campuses in Big D since 1929 and has long been surrounded by the spectacle that is the State Fair of Texas. We all love this rivalry and know it's one of the games circled on the calendar every year, so we're anxious to see a ton of Burnt Orange on the fairgrounds this week. The eyes of the nation will be zeroed in on it again in 2019 too, with the two Big 12 leaders and a pair Top 11-ranked teams on a collision course for Dallas. The State Fair of Texas will be rockin', The FOX Big Noon Kickoff pregame show will be broadcasting live on site to pump things up at 9 a.m. CT, and the hallowed turf of the iconic Cotton Bowl promises to be home to another classic Red River clash of the titans. Last year was me and my family's first taste of the rivalry and all of the pomp and circumstance around the historic venue – and let me tell you, it was epic! We can't wait to do it again!
It will be Red River Showdown day on Saturday for our Longhorns as Part II takes place on the historic hardwood of Gregory Gym, where Coach Elliott and No. 4-ranked Volleyball renew its rivalry with the Sooners. The match is already sold out and like the Cotton Bowl, The Greg will be electric for the 5 p.m. CT first serve. For those who can't make it or don't have a ticket, you can tune in and cheer on the Horns thanks to our friends at Longhorn Network. Like so many of our events, they'll provide first-class coverage!
Shout out to our Cross Country team that brought the heat at The University of Arkansas' Chile Pepper Festival race last weekend. The men claimed the team title among a field that included Top 25-ranked Oklahoma State and Arkansas, while the women took the runner-up spot in the team standings among a strong field. Preparations are going great as Coach Flo and the staff continue to get our squads ready for the Big 12 Championships in Waco on November 2!
Coach Joffe and a duo from Women's Tennis had a big week too, as they went north of the Red River in rival territory to claim a pair of ITF (International Tennis Federation) 15k pro circuit titles over the weekend in Norman, Okla. Senior Anna Turati and junior Fernanda Labraña teamed up to capture the doubles crown on Saturday, and Turati returned on Sunday to claim the singles championship.
Let's have a great week and we'll look forward to seeing everyone in Big D. Big Tex is ready, the corny dogs and fried food collection will be cookin' and our team is getting ready for the 115th renewal of the extravaganza that is the Red River Showdown. It's another week of that patented Longhorn pride, passion and spirit my friends. Let's do this!
