Thirty Longhorns to participate in Tokyo Olympic Games

A total of 28 current or former University of Texas athletes and two coaches will compete in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
AUSTIN, Texas — Twenty-eight current or former University of Texas athletes have earned spots on their home countries' Olympic teams, and two coaches with ties to UT Athletics also will participate in the upcoming Olympic Games. The 28 athletes competing marks the largest delegation that The University of Texas has sent to an Olympics, topping the previous best of 26 athletes at both the 1988 (Seoul) and 2000 (Sydney) Games.
The 2020 Summer Olympic Games will be held July 21-Aug. 8 in Toyko, Japan. All told, UT athletes and coaches will represent 11 different Longhorns programs (men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's rowing, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's track and field, women's track and field and women's volleyball) and represent 13 different countries (Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Jamaica, Netherlands, Philippines, Serbia, Singapore, United States, Venezuela and the Virgin Islands).
A total of 15 athletes and two coaches with ties to The University of Texas will represent Team USA in Tokyo. Texas is one of six colleges who have 15 or more athletes competing on the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team, joining Stanford, UCLA, Cal, Southern California and Georgia.
Men's and women's track and field will have a total of nine athletes in Tokyo. Heading the list is 2016 gold medalist Ryan Crouser (shot put), who shattered a 31-year old World Outdoor Record in the shot put in winning the U.S. Olympic Trials with a throw of 76-8.25 (23.37m) on June 18. He will be joined by Teahna Daniels (100 meters), Tara Davis (long jump) and Steffin McCarter (long jump) in representing Team USA. Melissa Gonzalez (400-meter hurdles) will compete for Colombia, and current UT junior Jonathan Jones (400 meters) will represent Barbados. Chantel Malone (long jump) will represent the Virgin Islands, Pedrya Seymour (100-meter hurdles) will compete for The Bahamas, and Stacey Ann Williams (4x400-meter relay) will represent Jamaica.
Men's and women's swimming will have eight current or former athletes in Tokyo, including three with Team USA. Townley Haas (200-meter freestyle, 4x200-meter freestyle relay), current UT junior Drew Kibler (4x200-meter freestyle relay) and incoming freshman Erica Sullivan (1500-meter freestyle) will represent the United States. Current UT sophomore Caspar Corbeau (100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter breaststroke) will compete for The Netherlands, and current UT freshman Anna Elendt (100-meter breaststroke, 4x100-meter medley relay) will represent Germany. Joanna Evans (200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle) will compete for The Bahamas, while Remedy Rule (100-meter butterfly and 200-meter butterfly) will represent the Philippines. In addition, 2016 gold medalist Joseph Schooling (100-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle) will compete for Singapore.
Men's and women's diving will have three current or former athletes in Tokyo. Alison Gibson (women's synchronized 3-meter springboard), current UT senior Jordan Windle (men's 10-meter platform) and incoming freshman Hailey Hernandez (women's 3-meter springboard) will compete for Team USA.
Current UT senior Julia Grosso (Canada) is the first Olympian in women's soccer program history, while former Longhorn Gia Doonan (USA) is the first Olympian in rowing program history. Former athletes Ariel Atkins (women's basketball), two-time Olympic gold medalist Kevin Durant (men's basketball), Chiaka Ogbogu (women's volleyball) and two-time Olympic medalist Cat Osterman (softball) will represent Team USA. Yvonne Anderson (women's basketball) will represent Serbia, and Jhonnatan Vegas (men's golf) will compete for Venezuela.
The two coaches representing UT in Tokyo are Matt Scoggin (head coach, men's and women's diving) and Erik Sullivan (associate head coach, women's volleyball). Scoggin will serve as the assistant coach for Team USA Diving, while Sullivan will work as the Team Leader for the U.S. Men's Volleyball squad.
Entering the 2020 Tokyo Games, a total of 159 University of Texas athletes have participated in the Olympics and captured a combined 144 medals (83 gold, 38 silver and 23 bronze).
