Freshman forward averaged 19.5 points, 14.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game in UT’s two contests to earn honor for second straight week.
IRVING, Texas — University of Texas freshman forward Jarrett Allen has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The voting was conducted by a panel of media covering Big 12 men's basketball. This marks Allen's second straight week to earn the Big 12 weekly award.
Allen averaged 19.5 points, 14.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game against a pair of Top 10 opponents during UT's two contests last week. He converted 16-of-24 (.667) field goals and 7-of-11 (.636) field goals and 7-of-11 (.636) free throws in the two games.
During Tuesday's game at No. 6/6 Baylor (Jan. 17), Allen recorded 17 points (7-10 FG, 3-4 FT), 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in 31 minutes. He then posted a game-high 22 points (9-14 FG, 4-7 FT), 19 rebounds and 3 blocks in 34 minutes during Saturday's contest at No. 2/1 Kansas (Jan. 21). He set career highs in scoring, rebounds and field goals made and tied his career high in blocks in the game at Kansas.
Allen came within one rebound of becoming just the fifth player in UT history to record 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game (Kevin Durant, Brad Buckman, LaSalle Thompson and Larry Robinson). His 19 rebounds marked the second-highest single-game total by a UT freshman in school history (Durant had 23 boards at Texas Tech on Jan. 31, 2007). His 19 rebounds also were the most by a Kansas opponent since Jackson Vroman (Iowa State) had 19 boards on Feb. 21, 2004.
For the season, Allen leads the team in rebounding (8.4 rpg) and blocks (32) and ranks second in scoring (12.5 ppg) while converting 59% (96-163) of his field goals. In Big 12 Conference play (7 games), Allen has averaged 15.6 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game while converting 61% (43-70) of his field goals and 77% (23-30) of his free throws. He has registered seven double-doubles on the season, including three in Big 12 play. In his last three games (all against Top 10 opponents), Allen has averaged a team-best 19.3 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in 33.7 minutes per game while converting 71% (22-31) of his field goals and 14-of-19 (.737) free throws.
Allen and Texas (7-12, 1-6 Big 12) return to action with a home game tonight (Jan. 23) against Oklahoma. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at the Frank Erwin Center and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
