Men's Basketball opens Maui Invitational with win over host Chaminade

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) -- Texas withstood foul trouble and the 3-point shooting of Chris Reaves for an 84-62 victory over Chaminade on Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.
P.J. Tucker had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the 15th-ranked Longhorns (2-0), who will play No. 12 Louisville or Iowa in Tuesday's semifinals.
Reaves, a junior college transfer, hit his first six 3-point attempts, finished 8-for-10 from long range, and had 33 points for the Silverswords (1-1).
Texas freshman LaMarcus Aldridge picked up two fouls in the opening four minutes of the game and classmate Daniel Gibson had two before 12 minutes elapsed. Tucker, a sophomore, picked up his third foul in the first half, and the Longhorns were forced to scramble with their eight-man rotation.
The Longhorns led 39-28 at halftime, but Reaves opened the second half with two 3-pointers, the second a four-point play that made it 42-35 with 18:56 to play.
Aldridge and Gibson combined for Texas' next six points to start a 17-4 run that made it 59-39 with 11:57 to go.
Reaves was unable to get off a shot for almost 11 minutes as Texas took control with its defense.
Kenton Paulino added 14 points, while Kenny Taylor and Jason Klotz each had 12 for Texas, which finished with a 43-28 rebounding edge.
Paulino was 4-for-6 from 3-point range and the Longhorns went 10-for-23 from beyond the arc.
Besides Reaves, Chaminade was just 3-for-17 on 3s.
The loss dropped the Division II Silverswords to 4-55 in the eight-team tournament it hosts. Chaminade ended a 30-game losing streak in the tournament last year with a 52-49 win over Villanova in the opening round.
