AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas men's track and field team has signed five athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Bubba Thornton has announced. Junior college transfer Ron Hill will be eligible for the 2005 season while Trevor Gerland (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch), Raymond Harris (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), Elliot O'Hare (Austin, Texas/LBJ) and Cameron Reeves (Houston, Texas/Taylor) will join the Longhorns for the 2006 season.
"This group will be a strong foundation for our program," said Thornton. "We'll get immediate help with Ron Hill and we'll add quality depth when the newcomers arrive on campus next fall. We feel that these athletes cover a wide range of event groups, which should help our team for years to come."
Hill, who will transfer from Mt. San Antonio Community College, was the 2003 U.S. Junior Champion in the long jump and will also serve as a member of the sprint relay teams. He was one of the top combined sprint and long jump prospects coming out of junior college.
Gerland is a great all-around athlete who will add depth to the combined events group. He will join a talented group made up of the 2004 NCAA Indoor Champion in the heptathlon, Donovan Kilmartin, and last season's runner-up in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championship, Trey Hardee.
Harris is considered one of the top high jumpers in the state. He will have a chance to learn from two-time National Champion sophomore Andra Manson.
O'Hare will add depth to the jumping event group. He was listed as one of the top triple jumpers in Texas.
Reeves brings his expertise to the throwing event group. He specializes in the shot put and was one of the top performers in the country during his prep career.
The Longhorns are currently preparing for their indoor season, which will begin in January.
