UCLA upsets fourth-ranked Longhorns

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Noelle Quinn scored the go-ahead basket with 16.7 seconds remaining and finished with 27 points, helping UCLA rally from an early 17-point deficit and beat fourth-ranked Texas 63-60 on Sunday.
Nikki Blue added 13 points for UCLA (3-1), which beat a top 10 team for the first time since Nov. 20, 1999, a 69-65 victory over then-No. 8 North Carolina.
Texas (2-2), which was coming off a victory over top-ranked Tennessee, was led by Tiffany Jackson's 19 points and career-best 15 rebounds. Jamie Carey added 15 points, and Annissa Hastings had 11 before fouling out with 2:05 left.
The Longhorns, who beat Tennessee 74-59 on Thursday, took a 60-59 lead with 33.1 seconds on a driving layup by Carey. After Quinn scored to put UCLA ahead, Texas' Nina Norman missed two free-throw attempts with six seconds to play.
Quinn grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She made two free throws to give UCLA a 63-60 lead with 4.7 seconds remaining. Texas' Heather Schreiber missed a 3-point try from the corner as time expired.
UCLA missed 15 of its first 16 shots and trailed 33-25 at halftime. The Bruins closed within 41-39 on a 3-point by Blue with 11:16 left and tied the score at 43 when freshman Lindsey Pluimer scored to cap a 9-2 run.

Well, this is typical of life on the road. I thought we had things pretty much under control until the final minutes of the first half when Jamie [Carey] and Heather [Schreiber] had to sit due to fouls. When they had foul issues, we became inept at that point and lost control of the game. UCLA made a run, they started making shots and got really confident before halftime. In the second half, they were really encouraged and that made it a totally different ballgame. We have gotten away with not boxing out very well on defense - including in our win against Tennessee - and gave UCLA opportunity after opportunity on the boards. If your opponent on the road gets 19 offensive rebounds like UCLA did, you are not going to win. When you give up 19 offensive boards it is hard to beat anyone. We knew rebounding would be a problem without Stacy Stephens cleaning up the boards like she did for four years here. Tonight, UCLA made us pay for it. I want to give them a lot of respect. UCLA is a very good team with tremendous quickness and athleticism. I was disturbed by the shot differential in the game. Even though they only shot 35 percent, the took 68 shots to our 49 and eventually, if you shoot enough times, you will beat your opponent. We didn't lose this game in the final minutes when we missed two free throws and Heather [Schreiber] missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds, we lost this game late in the first half and early in the second half. We didn't have much offensive power other than Tiffany [Jackson], who had another great game, and Jamie [Carey]. Right now, Jamie [Carey] and Tiffany [Jackson] are doing it all. My questions to this team are ... who will step up on this team offensively besides them and what will it take to be more focused defensively for the entire 40 minutes of a game.

On that last play, UCLA was keeping an eye on Jamie [Carey] all the way down the floor, and I had a wide-open look. I thought it was a good release and everything, but it didn't roll in. I didn't do the job offensively today and I think, as a team, we are still asking ourselves the same questions we did when we lost to Georgia. We need to do much better on the boards and we have to stop having offensive lapses.
