AUSTIN, Texas - Craig Helwig, who in the early 1980's helped The University of Texas athletics program initiate its annual giving program, The Longhorn Foundation, has rejoined the staff as Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving. In his role, Helwig serves men's and women's athletics fund-raising efforts and is the lead strategist for future capital campaign planning and long-term development goals.
Helwig teams with Hardee McCrary, development associate, and Lael Hasty, senior administrative associate, in the fund-raising area. The Longhorn Foundation remains as the principal annual giving arm of UT Athletics under direction of Senior Associate Athletics Director Doug Messer and Haila Kauffman, director of annual giving.
"Craig is an outstanding fund-raiser and relationship-builder," said DeLoss Dodds, UT men's athletics director. "He was responsible for organizing our early development, computerization, and ticketing efforts. Today, he joins us at a critical time as we look toward the future and prioritize additional facility improvements, stadium enhancements, facilities for our Olympic sports and baseball, and major fund-raising initiatives."
Helwig was assistant athletics director for UT from 1982-91 with primary responsibilities in marketing, development, and communication. He served Kansas State University from 1978-82 in a similar capacity. In the last decade, he also has served as vice president and general manager of the Texas Longhorns Sports Network, as executive director of the Sun Bowl, and director of athletics at The University of North Texas.
In the private sector, he has worked for IBM in Kansas City as an account executive and for SRI Sports in Leander, Texas. He is a graduate of Kansas State University and attended the IBM Advanced Business Institute conducted by the Harvard School of Business.
He and his wife, Terre, live in Lakeway. They have three sons: Ryan, his wife, Melissa, and their son, Hunter, in Houston; Carter and his wife, Leslie, of Keller; and Tyler, a recent graduate of the McCombs School of Business at UT.
