Texas rolls past Sam Houston State

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Tiffany Jackson scored 13 points to lead No. 4 Texas to its 41st consecutive victory at home, 83-33 over Sam Houston State on Tuesday night.
Jamie Carey added 12 points, five assists and four steals for Texas (7-2). Eleven Longhorns scored as coach Jody Conradt substituted freely.
Adah Wells led the Bearkats (2-7) with eight points and three rebounds. Sam Houston State shot just 25 percent from the field. The Longhorns scored 35 points off Sam Houston turnovers, two more than the Bearkats' total.
The Longhorns started the game with a 14-2 run, with Kala Bowers scoring seven points during the spurt.
Heather Schreiber grabbed seven rebounds for Texas, which outrebounded the Bearkats 37-26.

• This was the second of four consecutive home games for the Longhorns - the squad's longest homestand of the season

In talking about her team's defensive pressure throughout the game...
"I was pleased to see that we picked it up considerably as the game went on. It's all business now with our schedule. Rutgers is looming large on Sunday, and then we start Big 12 play. We've got to be ready for that. We need to be able to press some fullcourt and extend our defense, and we've been working on that. The energy was good tonight and we really forced the tempo up, which is one thing we need to do with our defense - force the tempo. We are better in the open court and with playing an up-tempo game. Yes, we forced a lot of turnovers, but we turned it over a lot as well.
On the play of the Texas bench (which out-scored Sam Houston's bench, 40-12)...
"We are making progress with the bench players. If we can get some solid play from the bench, we'll be better as a team. I am not looking for them to play spectacular, but to give us solid minutes. Many are starting to understand what we need them to do and when.
For us, it all starts with defense and rebounding. Rebounding is a concern. We need to be more aggressive and have everyone be determined when they go to the boards. Playing time will be determined for those who come off the bench and play defense and get rebounds and take care of the ball. Having offense off the bench is a bonus right now."
On the team's free throw shooting (16-24) ...
"This is a concern. We have not been shooting free throws the way we need to and we must improve. Yet, if I break down the stats, and look at the starters at the free throw line and then look at the people who have not played a lot, I think you'll find that over the season, we've had people consistently who are making them."
On facing No. 24 Rutgers on Sunday (Rutgers plays No. 8 Tennessee on Dec. 29 prior to game with UT)
"This game will be a challenge for us. We've already gone against some great guards this year from Penn State, UCLA and Georgia, and Rutgers' guards are in that class. Their guards are really good and are in the same league as the others (guards) we've already faced.
I have a great deal of respect for Rutgers (head) coach Vivian Stringer. She just won her 700th game, and has done that by taking three different teams to NCAA prominence. Right now, Rutgers is ranked in the 20's (24th), and they'll be looking to improve on that ranking. They may be quicker and more athletic than we are.
It should be a great matchup. We need a boisterous and big crowd. Right now, we have the longest home court win streak in the country, men or women, and the fans are a big part of having that continue. I just want to see where we are. We haven't been pressed in our last few games, and we need to have a test and Rutgers will give us one. We'll certainly see where we are entering the Big 12 after Sunday's game."

"Tonight, our frame of mind was being in the right position on "D". We need to be solid on "D" and not turn our backs, and that's what we've been working on the last few weeks.
I've played against Cappie (Pondexter) a lot. We faced each other in USA Basketball Trials and I am familiar with her game. She plays hard and I respect her game and what she does. Right now, it's a matter of looking at film over the next four days and working on facing their team as whole - they are not limited to just her."
