AUSTIN, Texas -- D.J. Augustin (Houston, Texas) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Rick Barnes announced today. Augustin's signature finalizes a six-man recruiting class that includes swingman Kevin Durant (Suitland, Md.), forward Matt Hill (Lincoln, Neb.), combo guard Justin Mason (Amarillo, Texas), center Dexter Pittman (Rosenberg, Texas) and shooting guard Harrison Smith (Houston, Texas).
"D.J. is a true point guard who makes everyone around him better," Barnes said. "He's got outstanding vision and a good feel for the game. Like each of the five guys who signed yesterday, he's also an exceptional person."
Augustin (5-11, 180), a point guard from Fort Bend Hightower High School who plays under coach David Peavy, is ranked as the No. 26 high school prospect in the nation by HoopScoop. Augustin played at Brother Martin High School (New Orleans, La.) during his junior season and averaged 21.2 points and 5.3 assists per contest. He led Brother Martin to back-to-back state titles as a sophomore and junior.
No. 2 Texas tips off the regular season with a home match-up against Southern on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the opening round of the Guardians Classic. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.
