Kansas State rallies for 72-69 win over Longhorns

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Twiggy McIntyre scored a career-high 19 points and No. 17 Kansas State hung on to beat Texas 72-69 Thursday night in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament.
The Wildcats trailed 65-58 with 4:02 to go before McIntyre scored on a layup and then made a 3-pointer to get Kansas State within two.
After Texas' Annissa Hastings made two free throws, Kendra Wecker scored for the Wildcats and Megan Mahoney made a 15-footer as the shot-clock expired to tie the score at 67-all. Texas (No. 10 ESPN/USA Today; No. 11 AP) then committed a shot-clock violation and Wecker hit a turnaround jumper to give Kansas State its first lead of the game.
McIntyre added two free throws to extend the Wildcats' lead to 71-67 with 26.9 seconds to go. Tiffany Jackson scored on a post move, and Kansas State's Laurie Koehn made one of two foul shots for the winning margin.
Daria Mieloszynska and Jamie Carey missed potential game-tying 3s in the final seconds.
Kansas State (23-6) will face top-seeded and sixth-ranked Baylor in Saturday's championship game. Baylor defeated No. 14 Texas Tech 58-57 in the other semifinal.
Wecker finished with 17 points for the Wildcats, who outscored Texas 14-4 over the final 4 minutes. Brie Madden added 14 points and Mahoney had 11.
Jackson had 24 points and nine rebounds for Texas (21-8), which has never beaten Kansas State in the Big 12 tournament. Carey hit four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points.
The Longhorns opened the game with a 17-0 run. Kansas State missed its first nine shots and committed six turnovers as Texas moved to the early lead.
Wecker finally got the Wildcats on the scoreboard with 14:16 to go in the half, and Kansas State began to whittle away at its deficit. McIntyre drained a deep 3-pointer with 1:33 to go in the half, getting Kansas State within 34-27.
Kansas State got within 40-34 with 15:25 to play when Wecker scored in the post and converted the three-point play, but Texas countered with an 11-2 run for a 51-36 lead with 12 minutes left.
POSTGAME NOTES
• The setback for No. 11/No. 10 Texas, now 2 1-8, snaps an eight-game win streak for Jody Conradt's Longhorns - their longest of the year ... Texas is now 12-2 in its last 14 games, 13-3 in its last 16 ... Texas now awaits an at-large bid to the upcoming 2005 NCAA Championship ... The NCAA Selection Show will take place this Sunday, March 13 on ESPN TV (at 4 p.m. Central) and the seedings and pairings for the 64-team will be announced at that time
• No. 17 Kansas State (23-6) will make its first Big 12 Tournament championship game appearance
• Kansas State advances to face No. 1 seed and No. 6 ranked Baylor (26-3) in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament championship game on Saturday, March 12 (6 p.m., FSN TV). Baylor advanced to the title game with a dramatic 58-57 win over No. 4 seed Texas Tech (22-7), as BU senior guard Chelsea Whitaker hit a driving left-handed underhand layup with 2.1 seconds to go to put BU up 58-57. Tech called a timeout and inbounded the ball under the BU basket. Erin Grant made the inbounds pass to halfcourt where LaToya Davis was positioned, but the was tipped away at midcourt by two Baylor players as time expired.
• This was UT's fifth showing in the Big 12 tourney semifinals ... Texas is now 3-2 in all-time Big 12 semifinal games
• Baylor advances to its second Big 12 Tournament title game in this the ninth year of the tourney; No. 2 seed BU lost to No. 1 Oklahoma (84-69) in the 2002 Big 12 title game
• Five different teams have won the previous eight Phillips 66 Big 12 tourney titles - Texas has one title and Iowa State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma all have two titles
• For Texas, All-America candidate and 6-3 sophomore Tiffany Jackson (game-high 24 points) logged double-figure scoring for the 26th time in 29 games to date; Jackson has been in double-digit scoring six straight games and 16 times in the last 17 games
• UT senior guard Jamie Carey (19 points) was in double-figure scoring for the 19th time
• Carey finished the game shooting 4-for-7 from 3-point range; in the first C UT-KSU meeting this year (won by Texas, 64-60 on Feb. 16), Carey went 6-for-8 from 3-point range, tying her Texas game high for most 3's made ... Combining her 3-point shooting in the two games, Carey went 10-for-15 from long range against KSU this year
• Senior Heather Schreiber notched a game-high 10 rebounds, marking the second time this year that she has grabbed 10-plus boards this year
