Swimmers compete at 2005 World Championship Trials

AUSTIN, Texas -- Former Longhorn Brendan Hansen posted the top time in the 100-meter breaststroke while UT senior Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) placed 11th in the 100-meter butterfly to lead a number of Texas swimmers from the past, present and future at the 2005 World Championship Trials, which kicked off on Friday at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Hansen, the world-record holder in the event, had no problem posting the top time in the finals as he finished over a second ahead of the field with a performance of 1:00.13 seconds, while UT junior Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas), clocked in fifth in the `B' final and 13th overall with a time of 1:04.40.
Wanezek and former Longhorns teammate Tanica Jamison each qualified for the `B' final in the 100-meter butterfly by virtue of their prelim swims and placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the finals overall.
In the men's 400-meter freestyle, UT signee Michael Klueh placed fourth in 3:52.92, out touching Southern Cal's Larsen Jensen by just over a second. Eight-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps held off Peter Vanderkaay of Michigan for the win as they finished with times of 3:47.79 and 3:49.38, respectively. Minnesota's Justin Mortimer finished third in 3:50.98.
In the women's 400-meter freestyle, freshman Macie Garrett (Nashville, Tenn.) placed 21st in 4:20.78, while Wisconsin's Carley Piper and local product Kelsey Ditto of Longhorn Aquatics went neck-and-neck to the finish. Piper clocked in at 4:11.05 while Ditto's time of 4:11.62 was good for second.
Rounding out the Texas swimmers competing on the first day of the Trials were sophomore Elaine Ferritto (Columbus, Ohio), who qualified 18th in 2:21.30 in the preliminary swim of the 200-meter individual medley, classmate Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.), who finished finished 30th in that event, and junior Amanda Larence (Nashville, Tenn.), who placed 37th in the 200-meter individual medley. Ferritto went on to place 23rd overall in the finals with a time of 2:23.90.
All first place finishers from Friday night's finals qualify automatically for the U.S. World Championships team. Second-place finishers will likely be added to the roster later in the week, pending other swimmers qualify in multiple events.
