Rowing wins fourth straight Big 12 Invitational
04.30.2005 | Rowing
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas rowing captured Saturday's first race of the day and never looked back as it swept all four scored races en route to its fourth straight Big 12 Invitational on Saturday morning on Town Lake.
The host Longhorns won the Big 12 trophy with 53 total points, followed by Kansas in second with 45 and Kansas State third with 40.
Texas' first varsity eight boat surged ahead of Kansas at the halfway point of the 2000-meter race, beating the Jayhawks by just over five seconds in the most competitive race of the day. The Longhorns' boat finished in a time of six minutes, 26.3 seconds, with KU taking second in 6:31.5 and KSU third (6:44.8).
UT boats also captured the top performance in the second varsity eight (6:37.2), first novice eight (6:50.7) and first varsity four (7:25.0) competitions.
Overall, Texas, Kansas and Kansas State finished 1-2-3 in three of the four scored competitions. Kansas State placed second in first novice eight racing with a time of 7:02.9, twelve seconds off first-place finisher UT.
"This was the last home race for our seniors, the final race of the season for the novices, so it was a nice way to end things for them," Texas head coach Carie Graves said.
The Big 12 Invitational is the "unofficial" rowing championship for Big 12 schools offering rowing as a varsity sport. Along with Texas, K-State and KU, the Austin Rowing Club's Master's Four also participated in the invitational and finished behind Texas' second varsity four boat, 7:30.6 to 7:39.6.
UT rowing will be back in action May 14-15, when it travels to Oakridge, Tenn., for the NCAA South/Central Regionals on Melton Lake. The Longhorns are seeking their third straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, slated for May 27-28 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
