MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Junior Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) won the Big 12 men's shot put title in dramatic fashion while sophomores Marshevet Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) and Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) earned Big 12 Championships in the long jump and shot put, respectively, during the second day of competition at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. The men's team currently stands in fifth place with 30 points and has 20 opportunities to score on Sunday and the women's team is tied for eighth place with 20 points and has 16 opportunities to score.
"Brian Robison is an example of what can happen through hard work and determination," said Texas men's head coach Bubba Thornton. "It shows that if you put the time in, there is a reward."
Robison posted a personal best of 64-7.75, which bettered is old mark by over two feet, to win the event. He was leading for most of the competition after his initial throw of 62-8, which was also a personal best. But, with four throws remaining in the competition, Missouri's Conrad Woolsey notched a put of 63-8.25 to take the lead. Kansas' Sheldon Battle was next and he moved into first with a toss of 63-10.50, which set the stage for Robison who was last in the order. He came up with a put of 64-7.75 to take the title and give the Texas men 10 points.
"The guys before me put the pressure on," explained Robison. "I knew it was important for the team that I step up, so to get 10 points when I was slotted for eight was really big."
Earlier in the day, Carter won her second Big 12 shot put title of the year with a mark of 56-6.50, which was over three feet better than the second-place finisher. She had previously won the indoor championship with a throw of 55-1.50. Carter became the first Texas woman's shot putter to win the Big 12 outdoor title and sweep the indoor and outdoor championships since Eileen Vanisi did it in 1994.
At the same time Carter was competing, Hooker was leaping past the field to win the long jump title. She finished the day with a wind-aided 22-7.25, which is the best long jump in school history under any conditions, bettering Nicole Devonish's jump of 21-10.25 in 1996. Hooker also notched the fastest qualifier in her first 200-meter race of the season, a 22.73, which ranks seventh on Texas' all-time list. She went on to qualify with the second-fastest time of the day in the 100 meters with a wind-aided 11.27.
"Our team had an excellent day, which was highlighted by the performances of Michelle and Marshevet," said Texas women's head coach Bev Kearney. "Aside from a few things, we had as good a day as we could have expected. We'll just try to keep it rolling tomorrow."
In other men's action, sophomore Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho) finished second in the decathlon with 7,472 points to score eight points for the Longhorns. He ended up tying for first or winning four of the 10 events. Kilmartin was the only Longhorn in the event after junior Trey Hardee (Birmingham, Ala.) had to withdraw from the competition after injuring himself in the 110-meter hurdles. The pair stood one-two heading into the final five events.
Junior Ronald Hill (Walnut, Calif.) earned four points in the long jump by finishing in fifth place with a leap of 24-9.75. He went on to qualify for the 100-meter finals after running a personal best, wind-aided 10.27. Freshman Leonel Manzano (Marble Falls, Texas) returned to Big 12 Championship action after winning the indoor mile earlier this season. He posted the top-qualifying time in the 1,500 meters with a 3:46.86.
On the women's side, junior Melaine Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) was the top qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.16 and notched the second-fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles (13.17). Junior LaTashia Kerr also qualified for the finals in two events while qualifying for the NCAA Regional meet in both She will join Hooker in the 200-meter final after running a regional-qualifying 23.55. She also qualified in the 400 meters with a regional-qualifying time of 53.53.
Sophomore Jerrika Chapple (Lancaster, Texas), who is the reigning 400-meter champion, will be running in both the 200 and 400-meter finals on Sunday. She posted a wind-aided 23.46 in the 200 meters and was the top qualifier in the quarter at 53.11.
