Junior safety/sprinter Michael Huff ran in his first Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, posting a regional-qualifying mark of 10.48 in the prelims of the 100 meters. He went on to run the leadoff leg of the 4x100-meter relay that finished second and earned eight big points for the Longhorns. Huff took a break from preparing for the NCAA Regional meet to talk about what it was like to compete at the conference meet and how things are coming on the track.
On competing at the conference championships:
I felt pretty good. It was a good environment to run in. Track and field was my first love, so this has definitely been worth it.
On qualifying for the NCAA Regional meet:
The main thing for me this weekend was getting a time that would qualify me for regionals. I would have liked to make the final and score some points for the team, but a regional time is good. Then, I just wanted to help the relay score some points.
On finishing second in the 4x100-meter relay:
We were a little banged up across the 4x100 lineup, but it was important that we put some points on the board. I got out to a good start and the rest of the guys did a nice job. Now, we have two weeks to the regional meet to rest up and get healthy and we'll try and run even faster then.
On growing more comfortable at each meet:
I feel like I'm getting faster and faster at each meet. So, I expect to run faster at the regional meet than I ran at the Big 12's.
