Q&A with Brad Buckman
09.13.2005 | Men's Basketball
Brad Buckman is entering his fourth season as the starting power forward for Rick Barnes' squad. Last season he led the team in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and blocks (50) and ranked third in scoring (12.5 ppg) while earning mention on the Big 12 All-Improved and All-Underrated teams. During the final 11 contests of the year, he averaged 16.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg while recording six double-doubles.
After returning to Austin for the beginning of fall classes, TexasSports.com had a chance to visit with Buckman, as he discussed the summer, his teammates and the upcoming season.
Q: How did things go for you and the team over the summer?
A: I think it was probably the best summer we have had as a team. We all got our grades together. We had a really high GPA this summer. I think the summer pickup games and our work in the weight room went great. Everybody is determined to get better. I saw a lot of improvements out of everybody, including myself. I have matured a lot, so I know what to expect out of myself. I think I did what I had to do, and so did everyone else.
Q: How have the first few days of individual workouts gone?
A: It's been tough. With the talent we have, it's been amazing. It's good competition everyday. Everybody is willing to work, and our coaches are working us hard. I think the competition we have during individuals is going to make us a lot better this year. It's been great. I can tell you it's been a long first week. Everybody is sore, but that's how it usually is in the beginning.
Q: What do you think about the new rule passed by the NCAA that allows teams to have full team workouts during the preseason?
A: I think it's great. It gives us a chance to do more stuff earlier on, so we can get the kinks out when practice comes. I think it's a great rule, and I'm glad it was put into play.
Q: How has it been having P.J. Tucker and LaMarcus Aldridge back on the floor?
A: It's amazing. Those guys do a lot for us, and you can definitely tell when they are on the court versus when they are off it. They both kept working hard, and they haven't missed a beat. They're great athletes and I know they're both glad to be back on the court again. It was a difficult time. I think it showed a lot of people that anything can happen, and it also showed that we are a resilient team. I am really excited to have both of them back. I missed them a lot last year. They are going to show everybody what they can do this year.
Q: What are your thoughts on the new guys coming in (A.J. Abrams, J.D. Lewis, Craig Winder)?
A: Those guys are competitors. I think Coach (Barnes) does a great job of always bringing in the right guys. By that I mean guys who are able to get along with everyone and be part of a team. They all work hard. I think they'll be a great addition. I know they are all eager to get out there and play.
Q: As a senior, what are your thoughts heading into this season?
A: I just want to stay focused and let the game come to me. I have learned from my mistakes in the past. You mature a lot from your freshman year to now, obviously. I know what it takes to be good and what it takes to be bad. I need to be more consistent and do whatever I can for this team. Guys look up to you because you are a senior and you've been here for so long. I need to show the rest of the guys what it takes to play at the level we want to play at this season.
