Men's Tennis preview: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
02.14.2006 | Men's Tennis
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 13 Texas kicks off a 12-match home stand Wednesday night when it plays host to 45th-ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. CST at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the UT campus. Admission is free for all UT regular-season home matches.
The Longhorns have more than earned the opportunity to play at home after opening the season with victories in three of four road matches. After winning at Minnesota and Arkansas on consecutive weekends, UT split a pair of matches last weekend at Duke and Virginia.
Texas closed its road trip by ending Virginia's 20-match home winning streak, defeating the sixth-ranked Cavaliers, 4-3. UVA began the season as a preseason No. 1 before losing to Pepperdine and Illinois last month.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi comes to Austin with a 2-3 record after blanking Texas-Pan American in its most recent match on Sunday, Feb. 5. The Islanders' potent lineup features 30th-ranked Raul Morant-Rivas and 50th-ranked Andrey Kumantsov. The Longhorns and Islanders last faced off on Jan. 17, 2004 in Corpus Christi, as UT claimed a 7-0 victory. Texas has won the only two meetings between the two schools.
Texas' 12-match home swing stretches from Wednesday through Sunday, Apr. 2. The Longhorns will play host to several top non-conference opponents, including third-ranked Illinois (Friday, March 10) and fourth-ranked Pepperdine (Friday, Feb. 24).
