As a Junior in 1998-99
Starting point guard ... claimed team MVP and Outstanding Defensive Player accolades, as voted on by the players ... earned a spot on the Big 12 five-man all-Defensive team by the media ... struggled early on to play the point but developed into the unsung hero of the team ... averaged 6.1 points, 3.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game ... played in all 32 games, making 31 starts (did not start at Arizona) ... led Texas in assists 22 times and in steals 15 times ... posted six double-figure scoring efforts on the year ... led the team and ranked third in the Big 12 Conference in steals with 69 ... also led the squad and finished eighth in the league in assists (3.94 apg) ... had a dramatic statistical improvement over last year's numbers ... upped his scoring average from 3.1 ppg to 6.1 ppg ... his rebounding numbers jumped from 0.8 rpg to 3.7 rpg ... his free throw shooting improved from 47.2% to 71.8% ... his assists jumped from 21 to 126 ... steals improved from 12 to 69 ... and his minutes increased from 10.6 mpg to 33.6 mpg ... recorded his first career double-digit assist performance with nine points and 10 assists against just one turnover at Oral Roberts (Dec. 2) ... posted 11 points and four assists in the near upset of #23 Wisconsin (Dec. 15) ... had back-to-back double-digit scoring performances in the first two games at the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic ... recorded 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting against Mississippi State (Dec. 28), before chalking up 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting vs. Princeton (Dec. 29) ... had a career-high 14 points to go along with four assists against just two turnovers in the "Big Monday" loss at #19 Kansas (Jan. 18) ... set a Big 12 Conference individual game record and tied a Texas school record with 10 steals in the home win over Texas A&M (Feb. 3) ... the 10 steals tied B.J. Tyler's school mark, set at Houston on Jan. 29, 1994 ... also had nine points and five assists in the win over the Aggies ... registered 10 points, six rebounds and five assists in the home loss to Oklahoma (Feb. 10) ... posted five points, six rebounds and five assists in the quarterfinal win over Colorado at the Big 12 tourney (Mar. 5).
Track and Field (Spring 1998)
Was slowed by a sore knee for much of the season ... posted a season-best jump of 7-3, good for a third-place finish at the Texas Relays ... was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championship ... did not compete in the indoor season due to basketball.
As a Sophomore in 1997-98
Played in 17 of a possible 23 games after becoming eligible at mid-term ... saw his first action vs. LSU on Dec. 17 ... it was his first game since the 1995-96 ACC tournament ... scored nine points and added a game-high four steals in UT's next game at Illinios ... played a total of 14 minutes vs. the Illini at the point guard spot ... posted seven points and four steals in 23 minutes vs. Houston ... made his first career start vs. Baylor and scored seven points ... posted a career-high six assists at Missouri and added 10 points and a career-high five rebounds vs. Kansas ... saw 11 minutes of action vs. Oklahoma in the season finale.
Track and Field (Spring 1997)
Came to Texas in January on a basketball scholarship made available by the transfer of guard Titus Warmsley to Montana State-Billings ... helped UT to a second-place national finish in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships by winning the high jump individual title with a personal-best leap of 7-6 1/2 ... it was the only individual title won by a Texas athlete at the meet and was the Horns' first NCAA outdoor high jump title since James Lott won the event in 1986 ... Wagner's winning jump was two inches higher than his previous personal best ... posted a 7-4 1/2 effort to take first place at the 1997 Texas Relays ... finished eighth at the NCAA Indoor Championships and second at the Big 12 meet ... earned all-America honors both indoors and outdoors.
As a Freshman at N.C. State in 1995-96
Played for head coach Les Robinson at N.C. State ... started his collegiate career with a bang by coming off the bench to score a career-high 29 points in the season opener vs. VMI ... followed that with a 17-point effort in the second game of the season vs. Winthrop ... ended up averaging 3.4 points and 0.9 rebounds in nine minutes per game ... played in 30 of 31 contests for the 15-16 Wolfpack ... saw the majority of his early season playing time due to the suspension of Wolfpack regulars Ishua Benjamin and C.C. Harrison ... handed out a season-high five assists vs. UNC-Asheville and added a season-best four rebounds vs. Cal Poly SLO ... his career highs for points (game one), rebounds (game six) and assists (game five) all came within the first six games of the season ... shot 37.1% from the field (33-of-89) and 31.9% from the three-point arc (22-of-36) ... also posted 25 assists and 12 steals on the year ... finished second at the Penn Relays and seventh in the high jump for the Wolfpack at the 1996 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships.
High School
Roosevelt High School in San Antonio, Texas (head coach Jimmy Littleton) ... averaged 18.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game as a senior on his way to earning first team Class 5A all-state honors ... shot 52% from the field, 41% from the three-point arc and 80% from the free throw line as a senior ... also threw down 22 dunks in his final season ... finished his career as Roosevelt's all-time leading scorer with 1,825 points ... scored 24 points in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches all-Star Game the summer prior to his freshman season at N.C. State ... averaged 21.0 ppg as a junior and 23.0 ppg. as a sophomore ... won two Texas Relays high jump titles while at Roosevelt ... still holds the Relays high school high jump record with a leap of 7-3 ... was also a two-time state high jump champ, including a leap of 7-3 1/2 as a senior ... the 7-3 1/2 jump was the second-best prep jump in the nation that year.
