AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas freshmen D.J. Augustin and Kevin Durant shared the team's Most Valuable Player honor in a vote of their peers, highlighting the 2006-07 men's basketball team banquet held Monday evening at the Frank Erwin Center. Freshman center Dexter Pittman claimed the Lowe's Home Improvement Most Improved Player Award.
Augustin earned honorable mention All-America accolades from The Associated Press. A Freshman All-America pick by The Sporting News, he led the team and ranked fourth nationally in assists (6.7 apg). Augustin also ranked third on the team in scoring (14.4 ppg).
Durant, the first freshman in NCAA history to earn consensus National Player of the Year honors, led the Longhorns in scoring (25.8 ppg), rebounding (11.1 rpg), blocked shots (67), steals (66) and double-doubles (20). He was the only player to rank in the Top 10 nationally in both scoring (fourth) and rebounding (fourth).
Pittman reported to campus on June 1 for summer school at 366 pounds and dropped over 70 pounds throughout the summer conditioning program and the season to become a factor in UT's playing rotation. He played in 29 of Texas' 35 games and averaged 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 5.3 minutes per game.
Craig Way, "Voice of the Longhorns," played host to the event. Texas concluded the 2006-07 season with a 25-10 mark and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
