AUSTIN, Texas -- The 2006-07 academic calendar year marks the third season of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown, the official moniker for all varsity men's and women's athletics competition between The University of Texas and Texas A&M University.
Three years of the Lone Star Showdown. Three outright Texas victories.
Based on baseball's weekend sweep of the Aggies, the Longhorns clinched their third consecutive outright Showdown title. Texas claimed the 2006-07 Showdown victory by a 10.5-8.5 point total. This comes on the heels of a 14.5-4.5 win in 2004-05 and a 14-5 victory in 2005-06.
The Showdown features all athletic competitions between Texas and Texas A&M in a system where each sport accounts for one point in the year-end total.
During the 2006-07 season, Texas earned single points in the sports of men's cross country, women's soccer, volleyball (two victories), men's swimming and diving, men's indoor track & field, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's outdoor track & field and baseball. The Longhorns added half-points in women's basketball, men's basketball and softball.
As a reflection of their commitment to academics, State Farm added a new component to this year's Showdown by recognizing a Scholar Athlete representative from each home team in each event during the series. Prior to each game, State Farm recognized a player from the home team who was a positive reflection on both schools and scholar-athletes around the state of Texas. At the time, State Farm also donated $250 per event to the home team's general scholarship fund.
