02.07.2008 | Men's Basketball
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore guard D.J. Augustin has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Augustin was joined on the five-person University Division first team by Ryan Bright (Sam Houston State), Paulius Packevicius (Rice), Ryan Wedel (Arkansas State) and Shamir McDaniel (Sam Houston State).
As a first-team all-district selection, Augustin automatically is included on the Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America teams for men's basketball are scheduled to be released on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Augustin is attempting to become just the second men's basketball player at Texas to earn Academic All-America honors (Jim Krivacs, 1979).
District 6 includes all Division I schools in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. To be nominated for all-district consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career. No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
A three-time UT Athletics Director Honor Roll selection (minimum 3.0 GPA), Augustin sports a 3.64 cumulative GPA as an education major. He posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall 2007 semester.
One of 16 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award (nation's top point guard), Augustin also is one of the top 30 midseason candidates for both the Naismith Trophy and the Wooden Award as the top player in college basketball. He leads the Big 12 Conference in assists (6.0 apg) and ranks second in the league in scoring (19.8 ppg).
Augustin and the No. 12/12 Longhorns (18-4, 5-2 Big 12) return to the court when they travel to face Iowa State in a Big 12 Conference contest on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip is set for 2:30 p.m. Central at Hilton Coliseum, and the game will be televised regionally by ABC.
