AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas coach Rick Barnes was leaving his office Friday night when he saw Damion James huddled over his laptop and stopped to chat.
"I feel you're really focused and ready to take it to another level," Barnes told his junior forward, who had scored 20 points only once this season and felt the coach's wrath in harsh words and some minutes on the bench.
"You can really feel it?" James said. "I know I need to."
James made a huge jump Saturday night, scoring 28 points--including 11 in a row in a key second-half run--to send No. 14 Texas to 67-58 win over rival Texas A&M.
"He works," Barnes said. "The kid is incredible."
James hit a low point two games earlier when the Longhorns (14-4, 3-1) dropped their only Big 12 loss at Oklahoma. He had 12 points and was benched for long stretches of that game. Barnes now admits maybe was too hard on him.
"I think I messed Damion up at Oklahoma," Barnes said. "He's maturing and it's fun watching him grow."
The Friday night chat and a change of philosophy to focus on the positives turned things around. James' 28 points against the Aggies were one shy of his career high.
Neither team had led by more than five before James started his run. His first basket put Texas up 44-37 and a couple of layups, short jumpers and a rim-rattling dunk pushed the Longhorns' lead to 52-40 by the time he was done.
"I'm just having fun, and we're winning," James said. "If I had done all this and we had lost, I'd have been sad."
The Longhorns also got 15 points from Gary Johnson in winning their 19th straight at home.
Donald Sloan scored 17 points for the Aggies (15-5, 1-4), who have lost four of their past five. The home team has dominated this rivalry of late. Neither team has won on the road since Texas won at College Station in 2004.
The two worst shooting teams in the Big 12 played like they couldn't miss in the early going. Both teams were knocking down long and mid-range jumpers before James and Texas A&M's Chinemelu Elonu got involved a series of big dunks that charged up the rivalry atmosphere.
Elonu finished a fast break with an alley-oop dunk that James answered with a two-handed jam moments later. Texas' next bucket came when A.J. Abrams floated a soft pass that James finished with another slam for a 26-23 Texas lead. The Longhorns led 30-28 at halftime.
The second half was still tight until James started his run with a layup and free throw with 11:22 to play. Less than 30 seconds later, Texas A&M's Josh Carter made a 3-pointer to keep the Aggies' within four and kept the Longhorns within striking distance.
Not for long. James was just getting rolling.
Two free throws and a slashing reverse layup after a Texas A&M turnover kept the Aggies from creeping closer and brought the sellout home crowd to its feet. Another alley-oop dunk, this time on a pass from Varez Ward, put Texas up 52-40. At that point, James was gassed and actually took himself out of the game for a breather.
"We did everything we could defensively," Sloan said. "A couple times, he just rolled over our smaller guards makes shots. That was the difference tonight."
The Aggies, who shot 36 percent in the second half, couldn't muster any kind of an answer. The Longhorns pushed the lead to 13 twice, the first when Connor Atchley finished a three-point play and again at 60-47 with 1:44 left.
"We have trouble scoring," A&M coach Mark Turgeon said. "Everyone knows that."
Texas needed James and Johnson's ability to strike from just about anywhere on the floor. Abrams, Texas' best 3-pointer and career leader, was held to 0-for-2 shooting from long range under the defensive lockdown provided by the Aggies' Derrick Roland and Dash Harris.
Abrams remains three shy of the Big 12 career record of 338 3-pointers held by Kansas' Jeff Boschee (1999-2002).

On Damion James: I thought tonight he did a good job moving and for the most part he played a few minutes more than he should have. When he gets his balance under him, he does a great job, but overall we're just trying to share the ball. I thought he did a great job shooting the ball. He screens and he's looking to move. He's playing stronger. Him and Gary [Johnson] both got anxious at times, but overall, they were aggressive and people didn't want to back down there. You're looking at a team who only took eight three's tonight. There's not a lot of room down there, but we didn't settle. They had a good week of practice. I thought A&M played really well. They shot really well but tonight once we extended our defense we got in a rhythm which helped us a bit.
On Damion taking himself out of the game after scoring 11 straight points: That's a sign of the maturity. He's out there longer. The only thing we tell him is that he has guys he can count on. I thought Dexter [Pittman] did a good job in spurts and that's what he has got to do. He has to get consistent for a minute or two in the game. Defensively we've been okay, offensively, we don't need A.J. [Abrams] to score a bunch of points. We don't want to be a jump shooting team. We're looking for consistency and that's why we're using our bench. Everyone has got to roll and do it every night.
On Damion's growth: Damion and I were the last ones to leave here last night. I told him, "I feel you're really focused and ready to take it to another level." And he told me, "I know I need to." He knows I'll get on him in rebounding, but he's maturing and it's been fun watching him grow. His attitude and his approach, he had a great week in practice. Damion James is as loyal a kid as I've known my entire life. There's nothing he won't do and I know that he is one guy who could care less about what people are saying about him. He wants to be a guy that sticks and he knows he has a lot of work to do.
On the team's offense: I like rim shots. I like Gary Johnson going down there are scoring. I like Dex going around the rim. A.J. played well tonight. He did a great job, he was patient and I thought he did a great job handling the ball. He and Connor are going to make shots eventually so I'm not concerned about it. That will come back around and I just want us to win when we're not making shots.
SENIOR GUARD A.J. Abrams
On Damion James : I think he did a good job of moving without the ball and getting lost in the flow of the offense. That's what we need from him, he was knocking down the jump shot, getting to the rim and being aggressive and that is what we need from him.
On having less shot opportunities: I get a lot of attention from the other teams on offense and it opens up the other players like Damion, Gary and Connor [Atchley] as well. Like I've been saying, I don't have a problem with people taking me out there because my teammates will step up and help us win. I know that I'm not going to get many shots with the way teams are defending, so I just have to knock them down when I can. But I have a lot of confidence in my teammates.
On tonight's win: I think we had a good week of practice and it showed up today. We picked it up. For the most part we all played pretty hard and we played tough and we're building every day in practice.
JUNIOR FORWARD Damion James
On scoring 11 straight points to widen the lead: I didn't know that I had that many straight points to be real. It was just open shots. A.J. [Abrams] was getting ninety percent of their defense and the rest of us were just open to hit down the shots. With A.J. getting all the attention we have to play off them, but to be the team that we want to be, we have to get A.J. going because he is one of the best shooters in the country.
SOPHOMORE FORWARD Gary Johnson
On Damion's offensive production: I expect it out of him every night. That's nothing new, I knew he can score like that. Honestly, it is no big surprise to me.

Opening statement: Like every game we've won this year, I was really pleased with our effort. Our guys were into the game from the beginning. We started the game well, something we've been concentrating on all week. I was really pleased. They hurt us on the boards, obviously. They had 16 offensive (rebounds), we worked on that real hard, we talked about it a lot. That was the difference. In the second half, I thought their press messed with us a little bit. It kind of took us out of our flow. Our defense was good enough, our rebounding wasn't quite good enough, our execution was great. I can live with that effort. I was really proud of our group.
On Texas forward Damion James: I knew when (Damion) James hit his first couple that gave them an extra scorer. They've struggled scoring. We turned the ball over there in that stretch (of James' 11 consecutive points). We just didn't do a good job early on him. The first play of the game, we talked about how we were going to guard that screen for him. They went that direction and the kid hit it. He's a heck of a player.
On holding Texas guard A.J. Abrams to nine points: Your whole game plan is to stop that kid. I thought he had a little more than (nine points). (Derrick Roland) and Dash (Harris) did a nice job on him. I was proud of our effort there. We did a good job on Abrams. We made him work, and we were really aware of him.
JUNIOR GUARD DONALD SLOAN
On Texas forward Damion James: He gave them a big lift when they needed it. Shots went in for him. I thought we did everything we could defensively. He rolls over smaller guards and he's able to make shots. He was pretty much the difference in the game tonight.
On the team's performance tonight: I thought it was better than what we have had. Like coach said, if we can continue to start games the way we started tonight, I think we'll be alright.
