ROME -- Competing in his first world championships meet, University of Texas rising sophomore Jackson Wilcox placed 14th in the 800-meter freestyle preliminary round Tuesday on day three of the 2009 FINA World Championships.
Representing Team USA, Wilcox (Nashville, Tenn.) took 14th in the 52-swimmer field by finishing in 7 minutes, 57.09 seconds. The top eight finishers advanced to the finals set for Wednesday.
Wilcox will compete in the 1,500-meter freestyle preliminary round Saturday morning in Rome. Wilcox captured the U.S. national title in that event earlier this month at the USA Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis.
