Rowing sweeps second session at Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Rowing team recorded victories in all six of its races at the second session of the 2010 Longhorn Invitational, Saturday on Lady Bird Lake. The Longhorns posted wins in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, second varsity four, first novice eight and second novice eight races.
Texas' first varsity eight boat comprised of coxswain Emma Dirks, stroke Charity McDonald, Courtney Nicklas, Meg George, Laurel McCaig, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Nancy Arrington, Jennifer VanderMaarel and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner defeated Oklahoma, 6:24.40-to-6:27.40.
The second varsity eight crew of coxswain Mary Cait McPherson, stroke Stephanie Matejka, Anna Thomson, Katarina Susac, Callie Mattrisch, Jelena Zunic, Tajana Lovric, Sally Tunell and Karli Sheahan completed its race in 6:45.20 to defeat Oklahoma (6:50.70).
The Horns' first varsity four of coxswain Megan Kelly, Colleen Irby, Katrina Cerk, Audrey Ullman and Kaitlin Lewallen bested the Sooners, 7:40.40-to-7:51.10. The second varsity eight boat of coxswain Emily Lantz, Natasia Giles, Tara Saad, Rachel Donnelly and Kait Postle crossed the finish in 7:54.40 to down Kansas State (7:57.40).
Texas' first novice eight crew of coxswain Erin Gamez, Taylor Parker, Madeline Shaw, Callan Wingo, Chelsea Burns, Lyndsey DuBose, Emily Gross, Sarah Pedersen and Jillian Domingue clocked a time of 6:53.90 to knock off Oklahoma (7:04.70).
The Horns' second novice eight shell of coxswain Katie Saye, Lindsay Brettman, Brianna Bridges, Kaylyn Fenner, Samantha McPherson, Kassandra Budzik, Spencer White, Brittany Jensen and Kat Tong defeated Oklahoma, 7:54.90-to-8:16.00.
The Longhorn Invitational is a 2,000 meter dual-style race held annually on Lady Bird Lake.
