AUSTIN, Texas -- Cory Joseph (Pickering, Ontario, Canada) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Rick Barnes announced Monday. Joseph will join the Longhorns for the 2010-11 season.
"Cory is simply a winner who will definitely have an impact on our backcourt," Barnes said. "Not only is Cory a very good basketball player, he is an excellent person with a truly wonderful family. Cory comes from a successful Grass Roots Canada AAU program coached by Ro Russell. Cory also has played for an excellent high school program at Findlay Prep, coached by Michael Peck. Both of those are winning programs who have excelled at the highest levels."
Joseph (6-3, 175), a guard from Findlay College Prep (Henderson, Nev.) who plays under coach Michael Peck, is ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, No. 21 by ESPNU and No. 22 by Scout.com. As a senior at Findlay Prep, Joseph averaged a team-best 18.8 points, 4.9 assists, 6.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. He converted 53.9% from the floor (216-of-401), including a 46.9% mark from three-point range (60-of-128), and 79.6% from the free throw line (148-of-186) while leading Findlay to a 32-2 record.
He led Findlay to three wins in three days (April 1-3) to capture the prestigious ESPN Rise National High School Invitational (NHSI) Championship for the second straight year. Joseph claimed Tournament MVP honors at the NSHI, averaging 20.3 points per game over the three contests. He had a team-high 17 points, four rebounds and three steals in Findlay's 59-46 win over Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) in the tourney championship game.
Joseph participated in both the McDonald's All-American Game in Columbus, Ohio (March 31) and the Jordan Brand Classic in New York City (April 17). He also started and played 22 minutes for the World Select Team in the 13th annual Nike Hoop Summit on April 10 in Portland, Ore.
