No. 18 Women's Tennis falls to No. 1 Baylor in Big 12 finals, 4-0

AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 18 Texas (17-5) registered a spirited effort in singles play but fell short of top-seeded and top-ranked Baylor (27-2), as the Bears knocked off the Longhorns by a 4-0 count Sunday afternoon in the finals of the Big 12 Championship. Baylor's Csilla Borsanyi was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the women's championship.
Texas now will await the NCAA Championship selection announcement which is set to air Tuesday, May 4 on ESPNEWS between 4 and 5 p.m. Central.
Baylor assumed a 1-0 lead behind a pair of doubles wins at the second and third slots. The Bears' Taylor Ormond and Carla Lindlar opened with an 8-1 win at the third slot over UT's Sarah Lancaster and Caroline Larsson. Baylor clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win from Nina Secerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk over UT's Amanda Craddock and Krista Damico.
Baylor took a 2-0 lead when Stanivuk posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over UT junior Maggie Mello at fifth singles. BU assumed a 3-0 cushion at fourth singles, where the Bears' 98th-ranked Csilla Borsanyi defeated UT's Lancaster by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
Texas would not go quietly, however, as the Horns engaged in three-set battles at the remaining four singles positions. Baylor managed to pick up a clinching victory from the 19th-ranked Secerbegovic at second singles. After dropping the first set to Secerbegovic, UT's Damico rallied to take the second set, 6-3. Secerbegovic clinched the match by winning the final set, 6-3.
Texas' 24th-ranked Ellis engaged in a quite a battle against Baylor's fifth-ranked Lenka Broosova at first singles. Ellis took the first set, 6-4 before Broosova claimed the second, 6-2. Broosova assumed what appeared to be a commanding 4-0 lead in the final set, but the freshman Ellis yielded nothing to the Baylor senior, as she took the next five games to assume a 5-4 lead. The match progressed to a tiebreaker, where Ellis held a 4-0 lead when the match was called upon Secerbegovic's clinching win.
UT's Corovic fought as valiantly as Ellis at third singles against Baylor's 68th-ranked Taylor Ormond. Corovic took the first set, 7-5 before Ormond claimed the second, 6-3. Corovic held a 4-3 lead when the match was called. After splitting the first two sets at sixth singles against Baylor's Karolina Filipiak, UT's Larsson rallied from a 4-1 third-set deficit and evened the set at five before the match was called.

On her team's performance: It is a little disappointing. We didn't play our best doubles today. Whenever you are starting without the doubles point, you have to win four matches and that is pretty tough. We fought hard all the way down the stretch. Baylor is the No. 1-ranked team in the country, and we played real tough.
