SERIES: First meeting
The 106th Season
Texas tips off its 106th season of intercollegiate basketball when it plays host to Boston University on Sunday, Nov. 13 as part of the TicketCity Legends Classic. Tip is slated for 6:15 p.m. at the Erwin Center. The Longhorns hold an all-time record of 1,638-965 (.629) in their previous 105 years of competition. UT played its first varsity basketball contest on March 10, 1906 and recorded a 27-17 victory against Baylor in Austin. The Horns went on to post a 7-1 mark in the program's opening season. Texas has fielded a varsity basketball team in every year since then with the exception of the 1907-08 season.
Texas in Season Openers
Texas has posted an overall mark of 86-19 (.819) in its previous 105 season-opening games. The Longhorns are 11-2 in season openers under coach Rick Barnes.
Texas in Home Openers
Texas has posted an overall mark of 90-15 (.857) in its previous 105 home-opening contests. UT is 29-5 in home openers since the Frank Erwin Center opened prior to the 1977-78 season. The Horns are 11-2 in home openers under coach Rick Barnes.
TicketCity Legends Classic
Twelve teams will compete in the fifth annual TicketCity Legends Classic. Texas, North Carolina State, Oregon State and Vanderbilt will serve as regional hosts for the event, and these four hosts automatically advance to the Championship Rounds, to be played Nov. 19 and 21 at IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J. The Legends Classic was established to honor former players and coaches from the participating teams that have made a significant contribution to the sport.
Texas in the TicketCity Legends Classic
The Longhorns will be making their second appearance in the Legends Classic. Texas posted a 4-0 mark and won the inaugural event in 2007, and the 2007-08 team went on to win the Big 12 Championship and advance to the NCAA "Elite Eight." UT defeated UC Davis (73-42) and Arkansas-Monticello (100-52) in the Regional Round games in Austin. The Horns then recorded victories against New Mexico State (102-87) and No. 7 Tennessee (97-78) in the Championship Round contests in Newark, N.J.
Series vs. Boston University
This marks the first meeting between Texas and Boston University on the hardcourt. In fact, the Horns have only played one previous game against a current member of the America East Conference prior to Sunday's opener. Texas defeated Vermont 90-71 on Dec. 7, 1979 in Austin.
Barnes vs. Boston University
Texas coach Rick Barnes holds a 1-0 mark against the Terriers entering Sunday's game. While at Providence, his team posted a 92-61 home victory against Boston University on Dec. 28, 1992.
Horns at Home
Texas enters its 35th year of play in the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns have registered an all-time record of 407-95 (.811) in the building. Since Rick Barnes arrived in Austin, UT has recorded a 182-24 (.883) mark at the Erwin Center, including an 88-16 (.846) record in Big 12 Conference home games. Texas is 92-9 (.911) at the Erwin Center in the last six seasons (dating to the start of the 2005-06 season).
Inside the Numbers: What was Lost from 2010-11
Texas returns just 17.0 percent of its scoring totals, 12.0 percent of its rebounding totals and 15.4 percent of its minutes played totals from last year's squad. The Horns lost their entire starting five (Dogus Balbay, Cory Joseph, Jordan Hamilton, Gary Johnson and Tristan Thompson) along with two other important role players off the bench (Matt Hill and Jai Lucas).
What Can Brown Do For You?
Junior guard J'Covan Brown has played in 69 career games (nine starts) entering the 2011-12 season. One of five players selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, Brown is UT's top returning scorer (10.4 ppg) from last year's squad. He ranked fourth on the team in assists (2.1 apg), tied for fourth in scoring and tied for third in steals (31) despite playing just 21.5 minutes per contest last season. Brown also led the team in free throw percentage (.861) and tied for second in three-point FG percentage (.385). He tied a UT single-season record for most 20-point games off the bench (five) and reached double digits in scoring in 18 of the 36 contests.
Brown's Free Throw Streak at 28
J'Covan Brown enters the 2011-12 season with a streak of 28 consecutive free throws made. This marks the second-longest streak in UT history (35 by Brandy Perryman during the 1995-96 season). Brown made his last three free throws in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship game loss to Kansas. Then he proceeded to hit all 25 of his attempts in UT's two games during the NCAA Tournament.
The Freshman Class
Of Texas' nine recruited scholarship players on its roster, six are true freshmen: forward Jaylen Bond, guard Sterling Gibbs, forward Jonathan Holmes, guard Myck Kabongo, guard Julien Lewis and guard Sheldon McClellan. The six-player group was ranked as the No. 4 recruiting class by ESPN.
