Saturday morning prelims sets up evening finals

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Women's Swimming and Diving team continued success on the third day of the Texas Hall of Fame Invitations beginning with prelims Saturday morning at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Saturday morning started with the women's 200-yard backstroke. In the last of seven heats, Katie Riefenstahl swam a 1:52.29 to make the A finals heat. She had the fastest time in the preliminary race, and beat the NCAA qualifying time by .08 seconds. Also qualifying for the A finals heat was Ashley Brewer with a time of 1:57.36. Melanie McClure qualified for the C final with a time of 1:59.41.
Two Texas swimmers made the A finals in the 100-yard freestyle. Karlee Bispo had the team's fastest time at 48.80, which was the third fastest overall. She will be joined in the A final by Kelsey Amundsen who had a time of 49.03. The B final will have two Longhorn swimmers including Bethany Adams and Samantha Tucker. Also swimming tonight will be Becca Tomlin and Alex Hooper in the C finals, and Lily Moldenhauer in the D finals.
Laura Sogar had the fastest overall time in 200-yard breaststroke, posting a 2:09.99 time. The next fastest Longhorns were Spindrift Beck and Gretchen Jaques who qualified for the B finals tonight. The C finals will feature Catherine Wagner, and the D finals will include Kierstin Thornhill.
Leah Gingrich posted a time of 1:57.12 in the 200-yard butterfly, and was the lone Longhorn qualifier for the A finals tonight. Five other Longhorns will also swim tonight. Kaitlin Pawlowicz and Ellen Lobb will be swimming in the B finals, Kelsey LeNeave and Skylar Smith qualified for the C finals, and Marylyn Toledo will be swimming in the D finals.
The 10-meter diving concluded this afternoon. All three Longhorn divers finished in the top five. Diana Wilcox led the Longhorns by placing second overall with a score of 291.55 points. Shelby Cullinan ended with a score of 266.55, placing third overall. Samantha Holland placed fifth overall with a score of 245.45 points.
The women's team entered Saturday in first place (606 points), followed by the University of Southern California (484.5 points) and Stanford University (451 points).
Saturday night's events will begin at 6 p.m. with the start of swimming finals.
