Women's Basketball beats Kansas 80-68 for fourth-straight win

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Women's Basketball team earned its fourth-straight Big 12 victory by beating Kansas 80-68 at the Frank Erwin Center on Saturday.
Freshman guard Chassidy Fussell led Texas with 25 points, marking the fifth-straight game she has led the Longhorns in scoring and 10th of the season overall. This was also her fifth-straight game to score at least 20 points.
Yvonne Anderson finished with 14 points, marking the second-straight game she scored in double-digits. Kathleen Nash added 12 and led the Longhorns with seven rebounds.
In UT's 15 victories this season, the Longhorns are outrebounding their opponents by almost eight. Texas outrebounded Kansas 44-33 and also found separation at the foul line, making 18-of-24 free throws.
Carolyn Davis paced the Jayhawks with 18 points and six rebounds.
Fussell's first basket of the game gave the Longhorns a 17-16 lead with 10:22 to play in the first half. UT used defense to extend its lead to nine at halftime. The Jayhawks made just five of 14 shots from the field in the final 10 minutes of the half.
The Longhorns travel to Kansas State on Wednesday, Feb. 9 to take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m.
TEAM NOTES
-Texas improved to 14-7 all-time against Kansas ... UT has won the last four contests ... head coach Gail Goestenkors also boasts a 4-0 mark against the Jayhawks.
-Texas' 37 first-half points were its most in league play and most since putting up 49 in the opening half against Sam Houston State (Jan. 2).
-The Longhorns out-rebounded the Jayhawks 44-33 ... it marked the eighth time this year Texas has out-rebounded its opponent by double digits ... UT is 12-2 when outrebounding its opponent.
-In its last four games, Texas has allowed its opponent no more than 68 points (Texas Tech, Jan. 26).

Texas Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
On the game: Overall really happy that we were able come away with the win. I thought it was a great team effort for us. I'm really happy with how we rebounded the ball in particularly. Kansas is an exceptional team. I think it was very helpful for us that they got into foul trouble early in the half. They had great players especially [Carolyn] Davis, she was tough for us to contain. It was part of the way we worked and attacked and got to the free throw lines and finish the game. We knew they would make some runs and they did but I thought we handled it and made some runs of our own and hit the free throws when we needed to and got some big stops.
On Chassidy Fussell: We knew Chassidy [Fussell] was going to be special. She came to our camp last summer so when you get to work with somebody in camp and you get to see them, their passion and how hard they work you know you are getting someone who is pretty special. We did have high expectations for her coming in.
On the rebounds: We're still looking for that consistency but tonight I thought we did a nice job. Coach [LaKale] Malone she is in charge of rebounds for us and she was frustrated after the last game, I think we only had eighth offensive rebounds and we only scored five points off of them so it was a point of interest for Malone when we broke down the last tape. I though the players made a concerted effort to go to the offensive side and score off of those.

On the team losing the first four games: It was really hard going 0-4, it really gets you down. We just decided to focus on one game at a time and keep our focus and know that we may have lost the first four but we're still in this.
On why she hasn't been wearing her face mask after her broken nose: It's not because it's not fashionable like my sister [Kristen Nash]. I've been wearing it in practice, it is a little uncomfortable. I've decided that for the game that I want to just stick to what I've been doing, at least when I wear it in practice I won't get hit then.
On the physical game: Especially in the first half it seemed like there were a lot of fouls early so we just had to learn to play off of it and not get as many fouls. It was really physical; they have a lot of big girls and down low so we just had to body up on them.

On the team coming back after losing the first four games: I think it shows how much confidence we have in our game plan and how much confidence we have in each other. We could have gotten down when we lost the first four but we didn't, we knew if we tweaked a few things we would be successful. Now we're four and four. It's not as great as we want to be but it's a lot better than what we could be.
Kansas Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson
Opening Statement: Just give Texas credit on the offensive glass, they got after us, and they got after us in offensive transition. Foul trouble ended up being an issue for us, and has been for these last two games on the road, and it hurt us. You know when you play 20 minutes and you go 8-11, you got a pretty good chance to have a pretty good night, if you play 35-36 minutes. That obviously was you know Carolyn's fourth foul was tough, we had cut into the lead, cut into the lead again. And then we don't answer and we don't make a run when she goes to the bench. I thought for us, Angel Goodrich, great pace, great tempo, great vision, really proud of her. We've tried to get back to us going baseline, and playing 94 feet, being more aggressive in transition, and she's embraced that the last two games. The Colorado game at home, it's her motor that moves us and it was her motor that moved us today.
On whether she considered putting Carolyn Davis back in, in the second half: That's what I did in the second half before it got ugly quick, but not in the first half. As long as you kind of hold on and hold on, as long as it doesn't get out of control in the second half, that's when we went back to Monica (Engelman), Aishah (Sutherland), and Carolyn (Davis). Coming out of the locker room it's, nine at the half. So we come out of the locker room and the first media we say let's cut it to half of nine and my math says four, So we cut to four, and in doing that all three kids pick up fouls. Aishah, Monica, and Carolyn all pick up fouls. Those kids go to the bench and they make another run, and then we go to these guys to get them off. I probably would have waited a couple more minutes, but I thought we can't. I think it got to nine again, I believe. And then we cut it to four again with those guys in the game. Bottom line is, our best guys need to play a little bit more tonight.
Carolyn Davis
On the physicality of the game: I mean it's tough, it's the Big 12, everyone plays physical, and I think the Nash sisters are probably more physical than people would think. They started the game off and sent a message, and they were really physical, and I mean at times we didn't match that and when we did, we got fouls.
