SAN ANTONIO - Texas Soccer opens the Big 12 Championship as the No. 4 seed, its highest since a No. 2 showing in 2007. A year ago, UT played in this same contest as the No. 5 seed and defeated Texas Tech 1-0 with a goal from current senior Kristin Cummins at 10:51.
UT is the lone current member of the Big 12 to qualify for the league's postseason tournament every year, and one of two to have won a Big 12 Championship. The Longhorns have claimed a pair of league tournament titles in program history, taking the 2006 and 2007 crowns by defeating Colorado 5-4 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 regulation draw for the first title and downing Texas A&M 2-1 for the second.
Earlier this week, Texas had five players earn All-Big 12 Conference recognition as Cummins was a first-team selection while freshman goalkeeper Abby Smith and sophomore midfielder Sharis Lachappelle were second-team honorees. Smith and Lachappelle were joined on the All-Big 12 Newcomer Team by freshmen Ali Schmalz and Lindsey Meyer.
The Sooners earned the No. 5 seed to the Big 12 Championship after finishing the regular season with a 3-3-2 league mark. Oklahoma is led on offense by senior, and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Renae Cuellar's 12 goals, five game-winning goals, 26 points, 88 shots and 52 shots on goal. She checks in second in the league in shots, points and goals. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire has recorded a Big 12-best 96 saves to go along with a 1.18 goals against average.
If the Longhorns down the Sooners Wednesday, they will continue the title race by playing the winner of the West Virginia versus TCU contest on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
