Rowing captures fourth straight Big 12 title

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Texas Rowing earned its fourth-consecutive Big 12 Conference title by just one point over Oklahoma, the closest margin of victory ever in the conference title. Texas earned 105 points, Oklahoma followed with 104 points and Kansas and Kansas State tied for third place with 64 points.
The first varsity eight of coxswain Rachel Donnelly, Brenna Coldren, Laurel McCaig, Melanie Eckert, Chelsea Burns, Hannah Moon, Casey Redman, Jackie Gorcyca and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner fell to Oklahoma with a time of 6:54.03 to 6:53.58.
Texas' second varsity eight, comprised of coxswain Megan Kelly, Katarina Susac, Kim Gorcyca, Katie Trovato, Jessica Glennie, Olivia Nail, Courtney Nicklas, Devon Clark and Karli Sheahan won their race with a time of 6:58.63.
The third varsity eight of coxswain Stephanie Bickford, Taylar Williams, Lauren Barlow, Jessica Williams, Amy Gross, Alex Buck, Lauren Moberg, Sara Walton and Christine Young placed second behind Oklahoma with a time of 7:10.38.
Mackenzie Harris, Heather Leighton, Schyler Gilmour, Kara Turner, Angela Bumstead, Jazmin Smith, Lucia Mueller, Jenna Shorter and Katie Ogg rowed in the fourth varsity eight boat, and on their race with a time of 7:16.68.
Texas' first varsity four of Kassie Budzik, Taylor Parker, Tea Vrtlar, Sarah Pedersen and Abbey Wilkowski placed second behind Kansas with a time of 7:53.37.
The second varsity four boat of Katherine Tong, Lyndsey DuBose, Emily Jones, Jillian Byron and Natasia Giles earned a win with a time of 7:56.71.
Rowing becomes the third UT program during the 2011-12 athletics season to capture a Big 12 Conference championship, joining Volleyball and Men's Swimming and Diving.
The 2012 All-Big 12 Teams were announced as well, with nine student-athletes selected to each squad. The Big 12 Rower, Newcomer and Coach of the Year will be announced on May 2. The NCAA Rowing Championship will be held May 25-27 at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
