MAUI, Hawaii -- The EA SPORTS Maui Invitational announced today the official bracket for the 2012 edition of the nation's premier early-season college basketball tournament. In addition to the Longhorns, the eight Island Teams who will compete during Thanksgiving week in the Championship Round for the Wayne Duke Championship Trophy include Butler, Illinois, Marquette, Mississippi State, North Carolina, USC and host Chaminade University.
Texas will square off against Division II Chaminade in its Championship Round opener on Monday, Nov. 19 at 4:30 p.m. Hawaii time (8:30 p.m. Central), and the contest will be televised by ESPNU. The Longhorns will then meet either USC or Illinois in their second-round matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The final round of the tourney is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 21.
For the 29th year, Maui's oceanfront Lahaina Civic Center (2,400-seat capacity) will be home to Basketball in Paradise. The ESPN networks will once again combine to offer live national television coverage of all 12 Championship Round games. For the fourth straight year, every game will be produced in high definition on ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD and ESPNU HD. All games also will be available live on WatchESPN.
"This year's Championship Round matchups will give fans around the globe another compelling week of basketball in the most beautiful travel destination in the world," said David Odom, EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Tournament Chairman. "We look forward to hosting several of the nation's top collegiate teams to compete at the Lahaina Civic Center at the premier early-season college basketball tournament, and we're excited for another great Thanksgiving feast."
This marks UT's fourth appearance in the Maui Invitational. The Longhorns have compiled an all-time mark of 6-3 in the prestigious tourney in their three previous trips. Texas posted identical 2-1 marks in the 1993, 2004 and 2008 tournaments.
Travel packages that include game tickets to the Championship Round and hotel accommodations are currently available through Oahu Travel (http://mauiinvitational.com/travel or phone: 800-826-3822), the tournament's official travel agency. Remaining tickets for the Championship Round, including school-specific booster tickets, will be on sale to the general public beginning on Wednesday, August 22 at 1 p.m. Central (8 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time) via www.mauiinvitational.com. Ticket orders will only be handled through the web site and not over the phone.
Prior to the Championship Round games, the eight Island Teams and four Mainland Teams (Colgate, Coppin State, Elon and Florida Atlantic) will meet in seven Opening Games at the Island Teams' home arenas from Nov. 9-13. Texas will host Coppin State in the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Opening Game on Monday, Nov. 12. Tip time and television coverage for the UT-Coppin State has not been determined as of this date.
