MOSCOW, Russia – A pair of former Texas Longhorns stood out during Monday's action at the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Michelle Carter finished fourth in the shot put and Alexandria Anderson was seventh in the 100-meter finals.
Carter posted a mark of 65 feet, 5 inches (19.94m) on her second attempt and sat in third place until the sixth and final attempt, when Christina Schwantiz of Germany registered a toss of 66-11 1/2 (20.41m) to move into second.
Valerie Adams of New Zealand, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, led from start to finish. Her winning toss of 68-6 (20.88m) occurred on her third attempt, an improvement on her opening mark of 66-11 1/2 (20.41m). It was Adams' fourth-straight world outdoor title.
Carter had her best-ever finish at the World Outdoor Championships (sixth 2009; ninth in 2011). She was also third at the 2012 World Indoor meet.
After advancing from the 100m semifinals earlier Monday, Anderson clocked a time of 11.10 seconds in the finals. The 2009 NCAA 100-meter champion and a bronze medalist at the 2013 USA Outdoor Championships, Anderson was one of four Americans in the final. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica won the crown in 10.71.
Anderson reached the finals by clocking an 11.01 (third in third heat) in the semis. She is also in the pool for the 4x100-meter relay, which takes place Sunday.
Current Longhorn Danielle Dowie, competing for her native Jamaica, clocked a 57.03 in the first round of 400-meter hurdles. She was sixth in the fourth heat and did not advance to Tuesday's semifinals.
Leo Manzano is the next Longhorn in action. He will compete Wednesday in first-round heats of the 1,500 meters.
The NBC family of networks will carry coverage throughout the IAAF World Championships. A full broadcast schedule is listed below.
