AUSTIN, Texas -- It is no secret that The University of Texas is full of timeless traditions. From Bevo to the Hook 'Em Horns hand sign to the classic burnt orange and white colors, there are recognizable images known throughout the world. One of these world-famous images is The University of Texas' storied logo.
Athlon Sports recently named UT's steerhead logo as the nation's best college football logo. The logo has been in use by UT since 1961. The rankings were chosen by Athlon Sports Art Director Matt Taliaferro.
In Taliaferro's thoughts in the magazine, he said "the Longhorn is classic, simple, unchanging but also unique and creative. There is nothing else to say."
Associate Athletics Director for Trademark Licensing Craig Westemeier spoke similarly of the famous logo. "It's such a clean, easily-replicated logo. It's not a letter. It's not a number. And it's one color," Westemeier said.
"When you're creating a logo, you think of simplicity, easily recognizable, and distinctive. Texas' logo has all of those things," Westemeier continued. "It really defines who we are in the state of Texas, and it's not easily replicated. There's nothing else like it."
Westemeier attributes the popularity of the logo to the success of the university in academics, athletics and the presence of one of the largest alumni bases in the country.
Texas Football will once again sport the white helmets with the Longhorn logo in its season-opener August 31 against New Mexico State, with an added Longhorn logo to the jersey for the first time. The steerhead will rest at the bottom of the V-neck, just above the jersey number.
