Longhorns pick up two wins apiece from senior diver Maren Taylor and junior swimmer Gretchen Jaques.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 8 Texas (7-2) collected two wins apiece from senior diver Maren Taylor and junior swimmer Gretchen Jaques, but No. 3 Stanford edged the Longhorns by a 154-146 count Saturday afternoon at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Stanford held a 143-140 lead heading into the final and meet-deciding event, the 400 freestyle relay, with the victor assured of winning the meet. Stanford won the relay and the 11 first-place points that went with it in 3:18.98. Texas collected four points from its second-place relay and two points from its third-place relay, as the Cardinal emerged with the 154-146 win.
Texas opened the meet by collecting six points by way of its second and third-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay. UT's Lily Moldenhauer, Jaques, Skylar Smith and Ellen Lobb took second in 1 minute, 41.39 seconds.
Stanford stretched its lead to 25-11 behind a win and third-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle. Kaitlin Pawlowicz led the Horns with a second-place time of 10:05.96. Texas trimmed the Stanford lead by 13 points with its one-two-three finish in the 200 freestyle. Samantha Tucker claimed a narrow win over classmate Alex Hooper in 1:48.93. Hooper took second in 1:48.98 and Kelsey LeNeave placed third in 1:49.26.
Stanford pushed its lead to six points behind a win from Felicia Lee in the 100 backstroke. UT's Tasija Karosas took second in 55.17 while Lily Moldenhauer placed third in 55.46. Texas again narrowed the Stanford lead to one point on the strength of Jaques' 100 breaststroke win in a NCAA "B" cut of 1:01.23.
Stanford assumed a six-point lead once more behind a win in the 200 butterfly. UT's Victoria Cassidy placed second in 2:01.67 and Pawlowicz added a third-place time of 2:02.11. Ellen Lobb sliced the Stanford lead to one point with her win in the 50 freestyle in 22.82, good for a NCAA "B" cut.
Stanford took a 66-65 lead into the one-meter diving event, but a one-two-three Texas showing from Taylor, Emma Ivory-Ganja and Meghan Houston gave Texas the lead. Taylor took the win with 303.15 points.
Stanford added wins in the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke before Texas' Jaques claimed the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.83, good for a NCAA "B" cut. The Cardinal claimed the 500 freestyle and the 100 butterfly and took a 127-118 lead heading into the three-meter diving event.
Texas took the top three scoring positions in the three-meter diving event, as Taylor completed the diving sweep with 330.45 points. Ivory-Ganja took second with 328.05 points and Meghan Houston took third with 313.05 points.
Texas held a 134-130 lead through three-meter diving before Stanford reclaimed the lead for good with a win in the 200 IM from Maya DiRado. Madisyn Cox led the Horns with a second-place time of 2:02.38.
Texas hosts Auburn on Thursday, Jan. 9 (11 a.m. CT) and Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 11 (10 a.m. CT). Both meets will air live on Longhorn Network.
