As fans cheer on Texas Football against Iowa State on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, they are encouraged to dispose of recyclable materials in the appropriate containers to help The University of Texas win the 2014 Gameday Recycling Challenge.
Texas is one of almost 90 universities and colleges across the country, including five in the Big 12, participating in this year's challenge. The Gameday Recycling Challenge encourages participants, through a friendly competition, to promote waste reduction practices during home football games. One winner will be chosen nationally based on the diversion rate of waste to recyclables.
While Texas Athletics implements best sustainability practices at all home football games, data will be reported for the challenge based on the Texas vs. Iowa State game on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Texas fans can help make the biggest sustainable impact on gameday by diverting waste to more than 200 recycling bins located in and around the stadium. Recyclable materials include programs, plastic bottles, cans and all plastic cups. On gameday, 30 volunteers will be stationed throughout the stadium educating fans on which materials are recyclable.
In coordination with the sustainability theme, Longhorn Sports Marketing and Keep Austin Beautiful will present their 2014 Zero Waste Champions to Mary Jane Sims Elementary on the field during this Saturday's game. This award is presented in partnership with Austin Resource Recover and the Bleed Orange Live Green initiative. It recognizes a local Austin school for outstanding efforts to reduce waste and raise awareness on campus about the City of Austin's Zero Waste goal.
Texas Athletics' participation in the Gameday Recycling Challenge is a part of efforts to educate fans on best sustainability practices and how they can help. The competition is run by a partnership of the College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC), RecycleMania, Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and EPA's WasteWise program.
