With the 2014 indoor season just concluded less than one week ago, the Track and Field team will waste no time beginning the outdoor season, as the Longhorns will send a contingent of athletes to the UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational Saturday in San Antonio.
This weekend the women will begin to build off a second-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, while the men begin defense of their Big 12 Outdoor title.
Texas A&M, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, UTSA, and Houston will also participate in the meet. The meet is the first to be held at the Park West Athletics Complex, a new track & field facility on the campus of UTSA.
This weekend's competition begins with multi-events and throwing events Friday. Saturday's action will commence at noon. No Longhorns are competing in the multi-events.
Longhorn Notes
Petrillose on the Bowerman Post NCAA Indoor List: Sophomore Kaitlin Petrillose is one of 10 track and field athletes on The Bowerman Women's Post-NCAA Indoor Championships Watch List, announced by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Petrillose makes her first appearance on the watch list, and is the only pole vaulter and Big 12 athlete named to list. This season, Petrillose claimed the 35th individual women's indoor title in school history and first in the pole vault after setting an NCAA record with a clearance of 15 feet, 1 inch.
Briscoe and Crouser Nominated for Elite 89 Award: Longhorn senior jumper Shanay Briscoe and junior thrower Ryan Crouser were nominated for the Elite 89 Academic Recognition Award for Indoor Track and Field following the 2014 indoor season. The award recognizes student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for the NCAA's 89 championships. At the championships, Crouser claimed the first NCAA indoor shot put title in school history, while Briscoe finished tied for fifth in the high jump.
Ten Longhorns Earn All-America Honors: First-team All-America honors were officially bestowed earlier this week to athletes who placed in the top eight or were a member of an eight-person final at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Longhorn honorees include: Zack Bilderback (400m), Ryan Crouser (shot put), Morolake Akinosun (60m), Kendall Baisden (400m, 4x400m relay), Shanay Briscoe (high jump), Briana Nelson (4x400m relay), Courtney Okolo (400m, 4x400m relay), Kaitlin Petrillose (pole vault), and Ashley Spencer (400m, 4x400m relay).
