Less than a week after concluding the four-day Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, the Track and Field team, ranked No. 3 nationally on the women's side and 18th on the men's, is back in action Friday and Saturday when members of the distance unit will compete in the Stanford Invitational.
A group of seven men and seven women will make the trip to the annual two-day meet in Stanford, Calif., which features some of the top distance competition during the outdoor season. Each year many of the distance qualifiers for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds have posted their best times at this meet. The top 48 times/marks in individual events in both the East and West earn automatic berths to the NCAA Preliminary Rounds.
Senior Marielle Hall, who posted the top 1,500-meter time in the nation (4:17.10) during Saturday's action at the Texas Relays, is entered in Friday's 5,000 along with Megan Siebert and Connor Ward.
Craig Lutz will make his season debut, competing in the 5,000 meters. The junior was third in the 10,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships, but has not competed due to injury since November when he finished 15th at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Brittany Marches and Austin Roth will attempt to improve on steeplechase times posted at the Texas Relays. Marches clocked a 10:34.42, which ranks fifth on the NCAA West qualifying list. Roth's time of 9:09.67 is ninth.
The Longhorns also have three entries in the 10,000 meters - Olivia Mickle, Will Nation and Mark Pinales.
The field at the Stanford Invitational features athletes from 13 other top 25 Division I women's teams and 12 more on the men's side.
Longhorns Back Home Next Week: The Longhorns will serve as host to the second of their three 2014 home meets on Saturday, April 12 with the Texas Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium The one-day meet will feature men's and women's teams from Houston, Baylor, UTSA, UTA, South Florida, SMU and Stephen F. Austin. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. Central and running events at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Wood to be Honored on Campus: Phil Wood, a three-year member of the Texas track and field team (2010-12), died tragically on March 2 in Austin in a hit-and-run automobile accident. A native of Yardley, Pa., Wood was scheduled to graduate from the University later this spring with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology. The University Honor Guard will honor him at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 15 by lowering the Texas flag located south of the Main Building.
Horns Claim Inaugural Webb Cup: Johannes Hock made his season debut in the multi-events at last week's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and finished third despite still recovering from offseason elbow surgery. However, he and former Longhorn Isaac Murphy were the key reasons the Longhorns claimed the inaugural Webb Cup, which recognizes the top decathlon program in the nation, after last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships. Hock became just the second freshman to win the decathlon and Murphy finished fourth. At this year's NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., head coach Mario Sategna accepted the Webb Cup trophy (pictured above) from Frank Zarnowski, the founder of the Decathlon Association.
