Longhorns post a combined 12-3 record in singles and doubles on Saturday.
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 9 Men's Tennis finished the second day of UT Invitational with a 4-0 record in doubles and seven singles wins on Saturday at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
Round-robin play from Friday and Saturday will determine the champions of singles and doubles at the conclusion of play on Sunday.
"We got pushed harder today," commented Head Coach Michael Center. "There were some moments that I thought we could handle better but that's why we are playing these matches right now. We still have a lot of things we need to work on, so I'm not expecting us to play our best right now. It was a good day. There were some good tough matches and hopefully we'll play better Sunday."
The Longhorns went undefeated in doubles play, notching four wins with two apiece against Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Senior All-Americans Søren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool teamed up to defeat the Arkansas duo of Micolini and Parlic, 6-3. The partnerships of freshman John Mee and junior Nick Naumann, senior Adrien Berkowicz and sophomore George Goldhoff, and junior Michael Riechmann and freshman Adrian Ortiz-Ruiz all picked up victories. Redshirt freshman William Jou also picked up a doubles win while partnering with Alex Sendegeya from Texas Tech.
Seven Longhorns registered singles wins on Saturday. One of the most thrilling matches of the day was between Goldhoff and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Kevin Bettendroffer. After dropping the first set, the Texas sophomore won the second and third sets to take the victory, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Hess-Olesen, Glasspool, Riechmann, Mee, Jou, and Naumann also registered victories on Saturday.
The final day of the Texas Invitational will begin Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles competition. Admission to the Weller Indoor Tennis Center is free.
